Drabble – Slip

Thunder roared around the night skies and lightning cracks filled the air. The storm raged it's displeasure, or maybe it's delight.

Hephaestion turned on his side to look out the window and watch the performance the storm was giving. His bed was empty except for himself. When had that changed?

Not so long ago, during a raging storm like this, he would have known exactly the time the covers would move beside him and Alexander would slip between them to move close to him. He would open his arms and Alexander would melt into him, burrowing deep in his chest to block out the storm. After awhile his heartbeat would slow and he would quit shivering, until another lightning strike would awaken his senses again.

It was always a wonder to Hephaestion that a man who held no fears on a battlefield surrounded by death and destruction could be so afraid of natures' furies. But maybe the answer was more about control. The battles he had some control over, the outcome in his hands, but nature had a mind of her own and Alexander had to yield to her wishes, a task he didn't give up easily.

Lately Alexander wasn't seeking comfort in Hephaestion's arms anymore. He had someone else to keep him safe and secure. Hephaestion's heart gave a tug as he tried to deal with the enormous loss he felt, but tried to never show, especially to the one he loved the most.

One big flash of lightning made Hephaestion close his eyes and suddenly he felt the familiar tug of the blankets and a cold shaking body snuggled up behind him. He turned around, opened his arms and Alexander buried himself deep in the safety of his chest.

Slip into my embrace, Alexander, let me protect you.
