"Get him on the bed," Will orders.
His brother, Austin, carries the mutilated body of Paolo into the Infirmary. Kayla follows them, her face twisted in disgust, with Paolo's arms and leg are in her arms.
Paolo is passed out cold from blood lost. His body is unusually pale. Kayla places the leg and arms in the right spots. Will has to work fast if he hopes to reattach them without any lasting damage.
"Can we help?" Austin asks.
Will takes up a position and pulls the needle and surgical string towards himself, along with a rolling table. He puts on gloves. "Austin, I'm going to need you sing. It'll contain his blood lost long enough for me to get them reattached. Kayla, I'm going to need more ambrosia and nectar. A lot of it. And probably some gauze and more surgical string."
He doesn't look up to see if Kayla leaves. He doesn't have time. He pulls the arm closer to Paolo's body. Austin starts singing. The color starts to come back too Paolo's body as Will starts to stitch the arm together.
The next several hours is nothing more than stitching Paolo back together. Kayla has wiped the sweat from his brow as he does his work. Austin singing every so often, just enough to keep the color in Paolo's skin.
It's a long time before he's done. He does the last stitch and drops the needle onto the table next to Paolo's bed. He pulls off his sweaty gloves.
When he turns around, Kayla is curled into one of the office chairs, sleeping soundly. Austin is sleeping in the chair next to Paolo's bed. Paolo is still out, which Will supposes is a good thing.
He's about to sit down when he finally notices another person curled in the last remaining chair in the Infirmary. He smiles for the first time since the Three-Legged Death Race ended. He nudges the raven haired boy.
"Hey," Nico says sleepily. "Are you done?"
"Just got done. I was gonna stay to watch over him. But it just so happens that someone is in the only remaining chair," Will teases.
"I brought you dinner," Nico says, gesturing to the sandwich. "You looked like you were really concentrating so I didn't want to bother you. I thought I'd wait it out. I guess I fell asleep."
Will's stomach growls at the sight of the food, causing Nico to laugh softly. Will grabs the sandwich and takes a large bite. "Thanks," he says around the food.
Nico grimaces. "Didn't your mother teach you manners?"
"I just spent -" Will breaks off. He glances at the clock on the wall behind him. "Approximately seven hours reattaching body parts. I'm allowed not to care."
"How is he?"
Will turns to where Nico's gaze is. Paolo is laying peacefully on the bed. The stitches are holding nicely, already healing from Austin's singing and the ambrosia that Will force-fed him.
"They're reattached and the bleeding has stopped. We won't really know until he wakes up and I can test them. But he shouldn't wake up until morning," Will answers. "Now we just have to feed him enough ambrosia and nectar to heal him without killing him."
Nico nods. "He doesn't feel close to death anymore."
Will supposes if it was anyone else, that statement would sound weird, but Nico likes to point out if his patients are going to live or not.
"You should wake up Kayla to watch over him," Nico suggests. "She was asleep before Austin and I passed out. And then you should get some sleep. You deserve it after this."
Will nods, too tired to disagree. He wakes Kayla up with strict instructions to wake him up if anything goes wrong. He wakes up Austin to send him to the cabin for some sleep. Then he walks Nico to his cabin, with every intention of going to his own cabin. But he walks in to kiss Nico's cheek and somehow ends up face first in Nico's bed, sound asleep.
