A moment in the Future

King Arthur thought back on how it used to be.

When his father had been King, Magic had been banned and the people, himself included, believed sorcerers were evil and deserved to die. When he had been attacked by a fierce part Boar part Deer he had been saved by Merlin. That was the day he discovered Merlin was a sorcerer. He and Merlin had kept the secret to themselves until a flood swept through Camelot and flooded the town and lower parts of the castle. The water was so high people couldn't manage to reach the safety of the upper floors. He thought back to how the Queen of Camelot had nearly died and shuddered.

Flashback

"Gwen" Arthur bellowed but there had come no reply. He searched for the next 20 minutes and just when he was about to give up he saw a purple in the water a couple of metres ahead of him. She was floating unmoving "Guinevere" he he mumbled before throwing himself into the water. He swam as fast as he could towards her. "Gwen, can you hear me" he gasped as he reached her, he began pulling her to a part of floating debris which looked like it had been part of somebody's roof. Laying her down gently, he checked her pulse which to his relief was there but it was very weak. There was no way he would be able to get her to Gaius. He turned her over and began to rub her back trying to dislodge the water in her lungs but all that made her do was choke.

"Arthur" Merlin yelled scrambling over what was left of peoples homes. "Merlin, you have to help me, she's choking, I can't get the water out of her lungs"

Merlin just looked at him and then at Gwen. Arthur was still trying to help her choke up the water but the water in her suddenly turned to steam as did the water surrounding them, making Camelot look as though it was very misty, looking up he noticed Merlin's eyes had gone a strange golden colour. Arthur had only seen Merlin's eyes like this once before, when he had first discovered Merlin's secret. Gwen stopped choking and looked up at Arthur, her hand gently stroking his face.

Even though Merlin had saved Camelot, Uther sentenced him to death. Uther had only changed his mind when Arthur and Morgana threatened to leave Camelot and never return. That day had been a big turning point in his and Guinevere's relationship, as he had realised just how close she had come to dying. He had approached his father and explained everything to him. At first Uther blamed Gwen for witchcraft but to other members of the court it became apparent that they were in love. They were allowed to marry and Uther soon accepted Gwen. On his deathbed Uther told Arthur

"She may have been a servant, but she is pure and noble of Heart" that was the last time Uther spoke before his death.

"Arthur" a voice murmured in his ear "Are you alright"

He smiled up at her "Just thinking about the flood"

Guinevere smiled at him and leaned down kissing him tenderly before she rested against him, relaxing in his embrace.
