Katie stared at the ceiling as she lay in bed. Another school, another witch to hunt, with all the variations of yet another school. New cliques to learn, new names to remember and new friends to make.
It was possibly the last one that caused her to stay awake at night. Making new friends. Each and every one of them would forget her once she left. Her brother might last a little longer, his good looks drawing more than his fair share of admirers. He might even break a few hearts. (Katie had seen at least one of his admirers burst into tears when he left.)
Katie turned and looked over the room, memorising it's every corner and turn. It was transient, like everything else in her life really, but it gave her the illusion of permanence for a brief while. Like she was actually going to STAY this time and actually make a real friend. Like she wasn't about to disappear without warning.
The moonlight cast an eerie glow as it shone through the window, illuminating the other girls in the dorm. St Micheal's School was a pretty nice place. She could really see herself being comfortable here. The girls were friendly enough so far and she had had far worse teachers than the ones she had here.
Maybe she shouldn't bother with friends, she thought to herself as she turned in her bed once more. It was always the same routine after all. Arrive at a new school. Find the witch. Break his or her power. Leave with the hollow promises to write or meet up that were never fulfilled. Rinse. Repeat. There was no permanence to any of it. The same routine, the same old pressures, the same old cycle with an ever growing list of new faces.
Then again, she couldn't really do that either, she thought to herself as she turned in her bed once more. Katie LIKED having people outside of family to talk to, people to share silly little meaningless chats about nothing in particular.
Sitting up, she grabbed the jug of water beside her and poured herself a cup of water. Maybe this would help her go to sleep.
It was a shame it couldn't fill the best friend shaped hole in her life.
