Her Remnants

He could vanish in a moment. That was all that she knew and all that she feared. She didn't want to lose him but there was little that she could do.

Miku

Aki

Forgive me…

Death dealt a devastating blow. Her father, her brother and too many others were proof of that. She wanted to be strong but there was no strength which could match death. Death was too great a moment – for that was all death was, a singular moment – and no matter what she did there would be no stopping it.

Tōya was insignificant to life. He couldn't change the course of history. He wasn't a decider of fate. He was simply a man who had a great destiny – a destiny that he had completed. That was the source of Aya's worries. He had done all that he was meant to do with the time he had left.

He could easily be taken away. He could give no more than he already had. His place in the world was slowly diminishing with every passing instant. She wanted to believe the same of everybody. However, Tōya was an exception that she couldn't overlook.

Had the Hagoroma decided his life's end? She couldn't tell. The item itself seemed to be inanimate; a simple source of power and nothing more. There was no life that it exuded. It would have been impossible to believe that it even possessed the slightest sentience had it not been Tōya's creator.

What would happen if Tōya died soon? How would Miku and Aki cope? They were far too young to lose someone so close to them. When that day would finally come they would also have to cope with Yūhi's new role. How could she explain that to them without revealing the truth? They were too young to be facing such a prospect.

The possibilities, endless and heart-breaking, were a constant headache. She wanted Tōya's life to be as easy and wonderful as possible. However, she worried constantly and he knew it. It seemed that even after all that had been said and done they still wouldn't be granted a moments respite.

She didn't know whether to thank Ceres for the love that her Hagoroma had bestowed or curse its part in Tōya's end.

Author's Note: I wanted to do something for Ayashi no Ceres. I felt quite bad that I haven't done so before. At least, I don't remember ever doing one before. These stories of mine are usually along this kind of subject. This angst-y, tragic, thinking of what was, mourning what will kind of thing that really should be a separate genre. Anyway, I haven't watched the anime in a long time and I haven't read the manga. The facts are from Wikipedia and we all know that's not the best point of reference but somehow more helpful than the wikia… Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed my work. I apologise if I'm not good enough as a writer.
