The images swirled in his mind. They flashed so fast. Strange visions swept in and out so quickly he wasn't sure what they really were. A blurred view of a room filled with jars each containing a small baby shimmered and swam to become a toddler with wires instead of hair… this melted and reformed into an intense bright light shining from above, then faded to blackness. He heard a high pitched humming noise getting closer to his head... and closer... and closer... he screamed…
He woke with a start, sweat pouring down his face and soaking into his pillow. It was nothing but the dreams again. He wasn't sure if he actually yelled out this time. He sincerely hoped he hadn't... she would love that! He tried in vain once more to keep the images in his mind… he knew they were important somehow, he just wasn't sure why or how. But, as with every other time the dreams occurred the content was already far beyond any clear recall. The only clear thing that he could remember were the emotions the dreams left behind... that of fear and of great pain. But from what he could never figure out.
Slowly he sat up in his bed and glanced around in the darkness. He absently brushed a lock of his long hair from across his eyes feeling the sweat already cooling. He debated whether to go get a glass of water when he spotted a tiny square of red light begin to pulse on the wall across from his bed. Rolling his eyes and groaning softly he decided to just lie back down and try to sleep again before they got too nosy. He should have known better... they always knew.
"Was it the dream again, Arrinay?" a tinny voice inquired from beside the pulsing light.
"Hmmph... like you really need to ask." he retorted, laying back down and staring at the wall beside his bed, not bothering to look at the now steady square of light.
"Can you remember anything from the dream? Perhaps talking about it could..."
"I SAID NO!" he snapped, sitting up and pushing the covers away to face the square. He was rather surprised at his own reaction and managed to stop himself from actually leaping from his bed. He closed his eyes, slowly breathing and tried to calm himself. He didn't know why this angered him so much; he couldn't even remember anything but vague nonsensical snippets from the dreams, so why should it affect him so intensely? He almost had the feeling it wasn't even the dreams that made him feel a rage like this. All he knew is he was very angry with her after shortly he had them. In any case he really didn't feel like sharing anything yet... especially not with her!
"No," he replied after a few more seconds of calm. He opened his eyes but looked away from the wall and the still glowing light. "It's just like all the other times... everything is long gone and faded before I can think of focusing on them." He lay back down and pulled the sheets over his head. "Look, I'm rather tired... could we continue this lovely chat in the morning?"
"Very well, Arrinay. I will disconnect the auto wake-up call for this morning so you can get a proper rest. Until tomorrow then." A slight buzz and the voice was gone.
He knew without looking that the red light would be off, but he was not alone. He never was. And after tonight's dream he knew there would be more than one set of eyes watching. He sighed, shifting a bit in his bed to get as comfortable as he could then closed his eyes to try sleeping again.
