Family Traits
By Silver Sailor Ganymede

"Why is it," Darren McKinley was saying, "that they sort us based on personality."

Teddy Lupin shook his head. "You're a Ravenclaw for goodness' sake, don't you read? They sort us like that because that's how the founders used to had pick their students – based on their personality traits."

"It seems to work pretty well," Stuart Bones muttered. "I mean look at Hogwarts nowadays – we Ravenclaws are the intelligent life-forms left on the planet. The Gryffindors are too busy showing off, the Slytherins are too busy plotting world domination, and the Hufflepuffs are to busy preventing a Gryffindor-Slytherin war happening again to actually think."

Personally Teddy thought that Stuart's cynicism made him sound like the perfect Slytherin, but he didn't voice that for fear of having to listen to another of his friend's rants on the subject. Stuart, however, was continuing his tirade regardless.

"And then of course there's the fact that houses seem to run in families. Most of my family, with the exception of Auntie Susan, have been in Ravenclaw for generations. Now why is that? Because of our name, or because of how we really are?"

"It's because of how you are, Stu," Darren sighed. "We've been through this before. You're in Ravenclaw because you're clever. Your Aunt was in Hufflepuff because she's a do-gooder. That's all Huffepuffs are good for."

"That is not true!" Teddy burst out angrily, his hair and his eyes turning a bloody shade of red. "That is not true and you know it! My mother was a Hufflepuff – and she was an Auror. And she gave her life in the final battle in order to stop Voldemort. A load of do-gooders? You're spouting rubbish, the pair of you.

"And I'll have you know that houses don't always run in families. My mother was a Hufflepuff. My father was a Gryffindor. My mother's parents were a Slytherin and a Ravenclaw. My father's parents were a Hufflepuff and a Gryffindor.

"Now go back to your stupid argument. I'm going down to the kitchens to get some food."

With that, Teddy stormed out of the common room.

Darren turned to Stuart and sighed. "He really should have been in Gryffindor with a temper like that."
