LOVE ON THE BARRICADES:
(This was written for a fifteen minute story challenge I had with a friend – we each gave each other a prompt.)
Love on The Barricades
Samantha ran up to Enjolras crying.
"What is it, my love?" Enjolras shouted passionately.
"Oh, Enjolras!" Samantha cried darmatically "I am pregnant!"
"Oh no." Enjolras said, his porcelain skin going even paler with horror and shock.
"Whatever shall we do?" Samantha sobbed.
"I shall go to the barricades, you shall stay here and give birth to the child."
"But Enlojoars NO!" Cried Samantha, emerald eyes filling with tears.
"I am sorry." Enjolras said solemnly "But I must do this for the future of the country." he leaned forward and rested his hand on Samantha's stomach "For the future of your - our - child."
"But how will I provide for the child?"
"In our new world everyone shall have enough to eat."
"That sounds fake….but okay."
Enjolras looked over his barricade with pride. It was a pretty amazing giant wall of furniture if he does say so himself. Even the random cow could not ruin the success of his revolution. Until he looked down and saw a familiar brown haired, blue eyed girl.
"Samantha!" He yelled passionately "What are you doing here?"
"I gave birth to the child and came back here."
"Wow that was fast - I don't think that is actually how that works."
"It was really convenient though."
"Well who will raise the child?"
"I know some people."
"Oh. Still. Wouldn't it be best if you were looking after her-him-whatever."
I could not let you die alone!"
"I wasn't going to die." yelled Enjolras "Why does nobody have faith in our revolution. This isn't even my first barricade and similar stunts have worked before. Hey, even in real life, the death toll was heavy on both side. Some workers did rally, it wasn't just ten students against everyone. We actually had hope. Yes we were aware of the risks but like it wasn't like we were kids mucking around on a barricade. The song "Turning" is not meant to show the pointlessness of our revolution, but to show a public weary of the constant fighting and fruitless struggle for freedom. A country who has seen revolution do no good. A cynical public. We actually had a chance. Oh My God." He paused and took a deep breath "Furthermore even if I was going to die, I would not have died alone, I have my closest friends on this barricade."
"Woah" Samantha said, taken aback by Enjolras' fourth wall breaking rant.
"Well leave. I will be back soon."
"Enjolras!' Combeferre shouted, running up to the not so happy couple.
"Yes my guide!" Enjolras cried."What are our chances?"
"We are so screwed right now." Combeferre yelled.
"Oh. Crap." Enjolras said.
"Yep."
Suddenly a National guard jumped up in front of the two men and the woman. He shot Samantha dead.
"Samantha NO!" Enjolras cried as he too was shot. Combeferre and the rest of the barricade was shot too.
Everyone still died.
(The child was raised by her adoptive parents and lived a happy life.)
The end.
