He wanted to get her back.
He didn't know how to do it. He didn't know if it was even possible. He just needed her back in his life.
As he saw the pieces of her diamond form rain down upon the street on which she had just sacrificed herself for two people who more or less hated her, he saw pieces of her memory that no one would ever remember.
If you asked him about her, he would first tell you about her perfect platnium hair that fell like a curtain created by angels over her fair face, her blue eyes that could freeze a person's blood or make it boil, and her lips cosmetically painted blue, which were a lovely shade of rose underneath.
Then he would tell you about her power. When she walked into a room, she commanded it. Sure, it was usually through sultry and otherwise demoralizing means, but the power was still clear with every kiss, every caress, every touch.
Her voice. Oh God, her voice! It would send shivers down his back, making the animal side of him growl with desire. That side of himself was a part only she could bring out. He could never tell you for sure why, but tell you that it would only ever be her.
Lastly, before he walked away, he would tell you about her love and passion. There was plenty beneath her icy shield, but he was confident that he was the only one to see as much as he did. He had watched that love and passion grow within her eyes as he felt his own expand to match. That's right. He loved her.
And because of his love for her, he had to find a way to piece together her shattered remains. He wanted to run out there, start picking up every last sliver of her body, but knew it was a pointless task. There were just too many.
He would have to settle for leaving once again. He had promised the future that he would help, and he had, but now that she was lost...no. Running seemed like the perfect solution. It always had been. Running was a poisonous cure, a bad medicine of torture and pain.
The injury would be healed, as was his signature, but the mental scars would always remain.
