Two teenagers sat under a towering oak tree on sprawling dusk green grounds, a huge castle rising behind them and a wide gray lake glistening below them. The grounds of Hogwarts were relatively empty due to the January cold, but the witch and wizard seemed unconcerned, warmed by fluffy scarves and thick cloaks.
"Happy Birthday Lils," James Potter said to his redhaired companion. He leaned in and gave her a single kiss, their cool lips brushing together softly. Lily grinned, and ruffled his hair.
"Honestly, I'm not too happy about it," she confessed, wrapping her arms around her knees, the smile sliding away.
"Why not? You've got cake, you've got presents," James replied "You've got me." Lily laughed again, and rested her head on his shoulder. She stared ahead as the lake rippled in the breeze, its stone-colored exterior reflecting the overcast sky.
"I'm getting old," she said flatly, and James laughed before realizing she was serious.
"No, you're really not," he assured, brushing a gloved hand across her cheek.
"Yes, I am. It's scary how fast life is going! In forty years I'll be 59. I'll be almost sixty, almost dead!"
"Ok, one, you won't be 59, you'll be 57," Lily shot James an icy glare at his correction, and he continued, "And two, 59 is not close to death."
"But think of how much will have happened by then! We will barely remember this day, we won't have seen Hogwarts for the longest time… It will be dreadful."
"Not with me there," James joked, "I'll always be the life of the party." Lily smiled, but didn't seem satisfied.
"I don't want to die, James," she whispered quietly, so he could barely hear her over the wind.
"You aren't going to die for a long, long time," James soothed, brushing back her fly away red hair "Probably not for another hundred and fifty years."
"Will you still love me when I'm all wrinkled?" Lily asked, a slight quiver to her voice.
"Lily!" James exclaimed, "Where is this all coming from?" He shifted until he faced her.
"I… I…"
"Yes I'll bloody love you when you're wrinkled! I'll love you if you get too fat, or too skinny, or if all your hair falls out. I'll love you no matter what!" He grabbed Lily's chin and pulled her to his, kissing her passionately. She responded gladly, knotting her fingers in his hair.
"James-" Lily whispered "I love you too." James kissed her once more before shifting away so his back rested against the oak, holding her hand.
"Come on, let's plan the best 59th birthday ever," James said "That way, you won't think about age at all. Only how much fun you're having." Lily smiled and tilted her head to the sky.
"Go on."
"Ok so we need to have balloons, ooh and cake!" James started, waving his hands for emphasis, and Lily laughed again. She rested her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes as he described the event. And so they sat, two teenagers in love, planning a birthday party they wouldn't live to see.
Thank you so much for reading, this was a super quick one shot since today (January 30th, 2019) would have been Lily's 59th birthday. Please review!
