GUITAR GODS
"WILSON!"
Dr. James Wilson stopped in the middle of the hallway leading to his office. Turning he saw the lumbering figure of Dr. Gregory House limping down the hall.
"You do realize this is a hospital right?"
"Explains all the people coughing downstairs; what are you doing tonight."
Wilson contemplated his answer. Regardless of what he said he knew House would con or cajole him into doing what he wanted. He took the path of least resistance, "Nothing, what's up."
"Good, come over after work, bring beer."
"House, I'm not really interested in seeing the latest DVD from the Porn of the Month Club."
"Give me some credit would you, if this was just a porn outing I would make you bring the beer and dinner. I got something to show you." With that House breezed past Wilson into the Diagnostics Office and began haranguing his team. Sighing, Wilson turned towards his office. He had no idea what House had in store, but knowing House it couldn't be good.
At seven that night Wilson knocked on the door to 221B.
"Come in!"
Wilson entered and looked around. Nothing seemed out of place, House was in the kitchen and classic rock drifted from the stereo. It was all so normal Wilson was immediately suspicious.
Leaving the kitchen House headed over to the stereo and cut off the music.
"Soooo…what's up?"
"This." House reached down and in one smooth motion shoved a red and black object into Wilson's hands. Looking down Wilson could see it was a toy guitar, a Flying V replica to be exact.
"You brought me over on a Friday night to show me a toy guitar?"
"That's not a toy, that's the controller. Sit down. This is why I brought you over." House tossed a disc case on the couch next to Wilson. Wilson eyed the red and black box.
"Guitar Hero II."
"The sequel to the best music game of 2005..says so on the box."
"Why not Guitar Hero I?"
"Freebird Jimmy…Iron Man is a good song but nothing can top good old fashioned Southern Guitar Rock."
It suddenly all made sense to Wilson. A few months prior the pediatric oncology clinic had gotten a bunch of new games for the patients. Guitar Hero had been among them. House had been found challenging the kids when he should have been downstairs in the clinic. Now, he was bored and looking for a new challenge, but House being House he couldn't just tell someone he what he wanted, he had to be sneaky.
"Give me the controller." Wilson sat on the edge of the couch and waited for the music to begin. His fingers felt clumsy as he searched the green, red, yellow, orange, and blue keys for the right notes. He fumbled through until the red flashing bar and audience discontent signaled the end to his butchered attempt at Shout at the Devil.
"Damn Wilson, maybe you should have taken a few less theater classes and a few more band classes."
"Shove it House, not all of us could be band geeks in school. Some of us actually wanted to get laid in our teenage years."
"Ouch, that hurt Jimmy. Give me the controller and sit back and see how it's really supposed to be done."
Wilson sat and watched as the opening bars of the song passed by on the screen. He grinned to himself as House fumbled the first few bars, getting tangled up on the combination of long and shirt frets, but House quickly picked it up and by the end of the song he had a 92 percent completion, 4x score multiplier, and the computer audience rocking as he finished with star power. Wilson had to admit it was an impressive display of guitar ability.
"Okay showoff, warm-ups are over. I got the hang of this now. Prepare to lose." House grinned as he handed over the Flying V.
"Never gonna happen Jimmy my boy."
The End
