Tonight was a strange one. I got back to my rooms after night watch and my door was a little open. Pounce had left my for the night when he heard one of his lady cats calling at Nightmarket and I was just turning to go and wake Kora for help when my door was opened from the inside, the person who did so was out of my sight though. I would have run but I realised that the shadow of whoever was holding my door had a very Rosto-like shape to it.
When I still didn't walk in he came out to steer me in. I didn't want a thief to be touching me like that or thinking my rooms were open to them, no matter who the thief was. I pulled myself away from him, silently cursing the softness of his touch on my sore body. I looked him in the eye and said, "Rosto, I don't care what you think, that kiss didn't mean nothin' to me, you kissed me, remember? I don't care if you are the King of Thieves, I am a Dog and my rooms are off limits to you unless I say so and I would only say so if the others were here too."
He looked hurt, but recovered quickly, "Beka, it's not that, I wouldn't be so forward with you if it was only that that I wanted. You are still young and I wouldn't mess with you like that."
I dropped my gaze then, but my voice was not so shy, "I'm bruised and tired, I want to go to bed, I have to give a report to the courts by myself in the morning and I don't want to be worrying all night about why you felt you needed to break in to my room, if it wasn't for..well, that."
He startled me then by taking my hand so gently that it itched for a more solid contact and leading me into my room. On the bed was a basket of pastries, both sweet and warm meat filled ones.
He said to me gently, " I got your spare key off of Kora and was just leaving this for you when you came up. I wasn't waiting to ambush you. I thought you might need it, my human birdies told me that you've been a good puppy and managed to put one of my men in the cages for your effort. And that with all your running across the district, you missed your night time meal."
He turned to leave and said in a jesting tone, "A growing girl like you needs to eat. If you don't and you run out of energy my men might start to get lazy. I couldn't be having that."
I felt such a fool for yelling at him,"Rosto, I sorry for what I said to you. Thank you for this, it's sweet of you, but you really shouldn't do things like this. It'll give folk the wrong idea about us."
He smiled at me and my insides melted. His voice was soft again, "You're welcome, Puppy Cooper." And he brushed my cheek with the back of his hand so softly that it barely touched. I wanted to close my eyes, but my knees would have given way if I had let my mind linger on his touch.
I don't know what I supposed to do about Rosto, I'm only a puppy and he's making me chase my tail with silliness.
I guess I'll write about tonight's watch tomorrow, I'm too confused with myself.
Sorry about the smudge, my sausage filling fell.
