The first indication of trouble was the groan of the TARDIS as she took off - not the usual sound, but a grinding thing almost as if she was being torn in half.
"What was that?" the Doctor cried, as he shut her down and ran around the control panel.
Rose was standing there with a guilty look on her face and an empty cup in her hand. The coffee that had previously resided in it was dripping from the control panel accompanied by a cloud of smoke.
"It was an accident," she said sheepishly. "I'm sorry."
"Not a problem," the Doctor said as he cleaned up the mess. "Just be more careful next time, please."
He returned to his previous position to try the take-off again. Again, the grinding noise sounded.
With a sigh, he returned to his companion's side of the console. "Rose," he began, but stopped as soon as he saw her.
Once again, the girl stood there with a slight blush on her face, this time her hand empty completely. The cup was sitting on the floor, and the central column of the ship had a sizable dent in it that hadn't been there moments ago.
"Roseā¦" the Doctor groaned.
"I'm sorry!" she said. "I didn't mean it. It was an accident! When the TARDIS started shaking around, it just flew out of my hand, and-"
He held up a hand to stop her, speaking slowly to keep his calm. "It's all right; I can fix it, but it's going to take a little while. Why don't you go and make yourself some more coffee? And, please, stay in the kitchen to drink it this time, please."
"Sure." She turned to leave, seeming grateful to get away.
Not as grateful as he was, though. Finally I can get some work done without you going and destroying everything right behind me! he thought ruefully, smiling at her retreating back. He knew the menace would be back soon, so he would have to work quickly.
