Fourteen hours. He'd slept fourteen hours. It had to be fourteen hours because it was just eight o'clock at night when he fell asleep in their latest crap-of-a-motel, and unless they'd ended up in Arctic Circle somewhere, ten p.m. usually didn't come with so much sunlight.

He couldn't remember the last time he'd slept four hours all at once, let alone fourteen.

He'd slept fourteen hours.

The crap-motel room was empty, the sloppily remade second bed was empty, there was just a note 'went to get breakfast, go back to sleep' on the bedside table.

But even though more sleep sounded just fine, even after fourteen hours of it, what he needed more was to hear his brother's voice. He reached out and snagged his phone from the bedside table.

"Hey." A much-too-happy-voice sounded in his ear after hardly one ring.

"Hey." He answered back. Wow, he sounded tired, even to himself.

"How're you doing?"

"Well, if I fall asleep while I'm talking to you, don't take it personally…"

"Ha. I'm on my way back with breakfast. I'll be there in a minute."

He should ask back, 'how're you?' but he could do that in person in a minute.

"'Kay." And he hung up and didn't even bother to put the phone back on the table. He closed his eyes and was gone again in a second.

He woke up again to the smell of coffee tantalizing close to his face and that much-too-happy voice sing-songing,

'Time to wake u-up…'

And he opened his eyes to a take-out coffee cup perilously close to his face and the much-too-happy face of his much-too-well-rested brother not far above that.

Nobody – nobody – deserved to look that happy.

"Why is it -." He asked, sitting up, taking the coffee, and trying to scrub the sleep off of his face. "That you're the one who went a week without sleep or food or water, was repeatedly drugged into what should've been oblivion, had your brains fried extra-crispy, and I'mthe one still in bed?"

"Well, I guess it just sucks getting old, doesn't it?" Sam said, still looking much-too-happy. He took a huge bite out of a huge pastry and smiled at Dean.

Who decided that Sam looked exactly-happy-enough.

The End.
