Disclaimer: I don't own kingdom hearts

Parting Thoughts

Demyx had been staring at the book in his hands for the better part of the night. I have to give it to him… I just have to…But… what's the sense in it now? After all this time? It almost seems… pointless…

The soft gentle sounds of a guitar being played softly caught his attention bringing him out of his thoughts. He frowned and stood up. Now who would be playing at this time at night? he thought as he followed the sound to it's source. He soon found himself in his favorite room in the castle, the hall of empty melodies, and it in sat Zexion lost to the world as he was playing the guitar in his hands.

Zexion stopped the moment Demyx stepped into the room. "Hello Nine." he said quietly.

"I didn't know you could play that well." Demyx moved into Zexion's view. "You're pretty good."

"Thanks…" Zexion said quietly. He sighed and set the instrument aside as Demyx sat down net to him.

"I'm surprised that you aren't reading right now."

"I don't see any point in starting another book when I'm not going to be able to finish it."

"But you're coming back when you've finished working on the experiment that Xemnas ordered you to do…"

"Yeah…" Zexion said quietly.

The twosome sat in silence for quite a while listening to the almost nonexistent sounds of the castle… "Hey Zexion… do you think we'll ever get our hearts back?" Demyx finally asked breaking the silence.

A dark shadow passed through Zexion's thoughtful gaze. "I… In theory when we complete kingdom hearts we should be able to regain our hearts."

"But do you really believe that theory?"

"I-" Zexion paused… as much as he did believe it… Them regaining their hearts upon the completion of their Kingdom Hearts didn't seem… rational. "I don't know."

"Then why the whole 'complete Kingdom Hearts' speal? Wouldn't it be better if we just tried to fit in?"

"… Demyx… We're nobodies we will never fit in."

"You never know until you try." Demyx said quietly.

Another round of silence fell between them before Zexion broke it finally… "Do you really think there's an afterlife waiting for us?" Zexion asked his throat tight.

Demyx glanced over at the younger nobody whose eyes were glinting with tears. "I believe that we return to the primal source for either a second chance if our heartless is destroyed… or to move on to the next life."

"But do you think that God even cares about nobodies? What if this is it? And that there's nothing left after this?"

Demyx put his arm around Zexion's shoulders. "I can't tell you… the only thing I can tell you is that you can't dwell on these thoughts. Live every day to the fullest and do it for you."

Zexion sobered up and brushed away the stray tears that had fallen as he smelled Vexen approaching. "Thanks Demyx." Zexion whispered as he pulled away from Demyx.

"I've been looking everywhere for you Six. It's time for us to be going. And I need you to carry some of the stuff from the old lab to the new one. Now come along." Vexen growled before heading back in the direction from which he had came. Zexion sighed as he stood up from the floor. He looked sadly at his guitar before holding it out to Demyx. "Here. Keep track of her while I'm gone."

Demyx carefully took the instrument while he held up a copy of The Unicorn and The Wasp… "Here so you'll have at least something besides your Lexicon to read."

Zexion smiled as he pocketed the book. "See you later Nine."
