Maple Leaves
The fall, to me is the most perfect time of the year. Flaming maple trees line the streets and their vivid leaves flutter toward the ground. I watch the young children frolic in them, stomping their little feet to hear the soft crackle from beneath them. I often find them raking up the leaves in the park. It reminds me when I was a kid. The other kids used to rake up the leaves into an immense pile and then jump in! That's what they did all day as the wind tousled their hair and chilled their noses. After a few hours the wind would kick up and the skies would be painted in colorful pastels, their Mothers would emerge from their houses and take hold of their tiny hands and walk home. I watched all the children scatter in till the park was empty.
You will always find me on the oak bench at the peek of the hill at Century Park in the fall. The bench over looks the entire park and most of the streets too. A large Maple is adjacent to where I sit. Its leaves hover over the bench as if it were protecting me. A lot of times I sit there with my sketch book, drawing the maples. Sometimes I'll include the children too and passing visitors.
Just then, I here the crunch of a twig behind me. I turn around quickly and my eyes go wide with delight. It's him, my angel in disguise. The one to explain to me when I don't understand, the one to hold me when I am hurt, the one that will give it all up for me.
"Hey".
"Hi", I replied back.
"Drawing again I see", he says taking my sketch book from out of my hands. He turns every page with tender care as if my drawings were his prized possession. "Amazing", he whispers. The sun was dipping down into the hills and I watched the wind tousled his ebony hair. Finally he comes to one drawing. It was of him and me playing in a pile of leaves that the children had left. He looked up into my emerald eyes and a gleam of playfulness hinted his eyes.
This is going to sound silly but, I never played in leaves before. Where I'm from there were never crisp leaves to jump in or rake up. It's kind of my "fantasy" to jump in a pile of leaves with my knight in shining armor.
"Let's go", he said playfully, dragging me up to my feet. He grabbed my hand and pulled so hard that I flew on top of him and we started rolling down the hill. As I grabbed onto his masculine shoulders, I started laughing hysterically and I saw his goofy smile spin around and around.
I braced for impact as we headed toward the end of the hill. I felt little scratches on my face and dirt tangle in my auburn locks. I landed right on top of him, my nose touching his and I stared into his ocean blue eyes. I let out a small giggle as he pulled my head into a kiss. I couldn't help but tangle my hands into his locks and I felt his hands slid down to the small of my back. After what seemed like an eternity, we broke for air. He twisted my curly hair around his finger and said, "So, I guess you have a new thing to draw".
"What might that be Richard", I said childishly.
"Kori, you're a smart girl, I'll give you a hint". Then he leaned in for a second kiss. The leaves engulfed us into its beauty and I felt the wind blow against our faces. I broke away for a few seconds and glanced up at the maple tree that I sat under daily. As he stroked my cheek I couldn't help but think that there was no better season than the fall!
