Sam took a deep breath. This was it.
John came in from the bathroom, toweling his scraggly hair.
"I'm going ta the bar." he said, barely glancing at Sam, who nodded and carried on researching the monster they were hunting. He had to go it now.
"Hey Dad, before you go, I need to tell you something." he set the laptop aside and stood in front of the motel room door.
John sighed.
"What, Samuel?" Sam glanced desperately at Dean who nodded and mouthed 'Go for it.'
He couldn't back out now.
"Um, well I was thinking..."
He had practised this so much.
"I was looking around and thought-"
He couldn't stop he had to do this.
"There was an ad for a scholarship to a collage."
He could do this!
"I tried and sat the exam over the Net, and..."
THIS WAS IT!
"I got in. I'm going there in September."
Yes!
"Well are you proud?"
John stared at him.
"You're leaving us?"
Sam felt his heart take a vacation to Hell.
"Dad, I think Sam should do this." Dean saw the look on Sam's face and came to his rescue.
John turned towards his sons, fixing them with a disgusted look.
"He's worked really hard..." Dean had sat there, watching over Sam as he worried and sat the exam. He had been there, at one in the morning, when Sam got up and punched the air, finally receiving the accepting letter.
John narrowed his eyes at them.
"I should have left you in that fire." he spat and, throwing Sam to the floor, charged outside to the bar he longed for.
