His Right Hand
Author's Note-Hey, everyone! I got bored and realized that I hadn't written anything in a while, so….. I decided to write this! (It's Edmund-centric, but…. The others will crop up somewhere.)
Summary: Set during "Prince Caspian"-Edmund reflects on Peter's decision to duel Miraz.
It wasn't that the plan was really so bad, Edmund thought as he paced around and around the Stone Table. And it certainly wasn't that Miraz could just refuse and try to kill him, which would be completely brainless on his part. No, the thing that bothered Edmund most about the plan was the fact that Peter would be on his own. In most of their battles, the two brothers had fought together. Magnificent and Just, sword and shield. Edmund was Peter's shield, in the sense that he wouldn't let anything touch his brother. He protected Peter from evil creatures, corrupt delegates from foreign lands, and occasionally from doing something extremely blockheaded. Which, ironically, was pretty much everything that Peter did. The reason that the Narnians had been so successful in the battles they fought during the Golden Age was Edmund's battle strategy and Peter's rage. They made a good team.
At the sound of footsteps coming down the tunnel, Edmund stopped pacing and looked up. It was Lucy, his favorite little sister. (his only little sister.) "What's up, Lu?" he asked, noticing the worry lines that crossed her forehead.
"How are you okay with it?" she demanded.
"Excuse me-what are you talking about?"
"You know exactly what I'm talking about-letting Peter fight Miraz, ALONE!" Lucy took a deep breath to steady herself. Edmund glanced at her. "I didn't have any choice, Lu. You heard Caspian-the tradition is single combat. Besides, the High King usually does these sorts of things anyway."
"Yes, but….now he's just going to go and get himself killed!" Lucy declared. Edmund laughed. "Did Susan put you up to this?" he queried. Lucy shook her head.
"No, but she had half a mind to." She took a deep breath, and then continued. "How can you let Peter fight without you? It just doesn't seem right!"
"Nothing seems right right now, Lucy. The Telmarines should never have invaded in the first place, but that doesn't mean we can disregard their traditions. If Peter has to fight alone, then he has to. He won't be alone, though. Caspian and I will be here, and all of our army. We're ready to distract Miraz for as long as it takes you and Susan to find Aslan."
Lucy sniffed, and gave Edmund a hug. "You sure Peter's going to be okay?"
"Of course. You can trust me, Lu." Lucy nodded, squeezed him lightly again, and then ran out. Edmund stood there thinking long after she had left. He remembered all the way back to their first moment in Narnia, when he had been a bit of a brat. Okay, maybe more than a bit. But he had matured since then. He had grown into a worthy brother and King, worthy to sit in one of the four thrones at Cair Paravel. He had also proved worthy of his brother's trust. Peter never would admit it, but he couldn't get through a battle without his little brother along to help him. He was Peter's right hand, his shield. And he was proud of it.
Isaiah 41:10
'Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'
