Opposites
The man/shadow/being had forgotten everything long ago. Only the lasting remnants of his soul carried on. He was trapped in everlasting pain, but he would not surrender.
Time held no meaning here. Here had no true location. Warped shadows ruled despite his defiance. Sharp new pain overrode dull ache and weariness the instant his tattered mind adjusted. Torture became routine - until the light intruded.
Overwhelming night parted, leaving him at the trespasser's mercy. Eyes, accustomed to penetrating obscure shadows, burned in their sockets. Eyelids gave no protection from the searing warmth. Long familiar with suffering, the man/shadow/being welcomed the change from the cold and dark.
When the light's fire began to smolder, experience warned of either a new torment or the shadows' return. Neither occurred. He relished in the unexpected respite. In his anguish, the man/shadow/being had forgotten he could feel. Intangible caresses soothed unknown distress. His soul relaxed in the embrace of the tender glow.
Images passed by closed eyes. Memories. Not his. The light's.
Small hands solve their first jigsaw puzzle. Grandpa plays with him in a familiar room. He smiles brilliantly at his Mother. Satisfaction floods him as another riddle is solved. A newly delivered game to the shop creates excitement. Comfort reigns when stretched out in bed with a good book.
Basking in the affection, the man/shadow/being wondered if the gods had finally forgiven him. For what crime, he could not remember. Then darkness crept through the happiness surrounding him.
Grandpa reveals Mother's illness. A tombstone lovingly inscribed continues to stand. Observing classmates interact, he sits alone. Hidden tears after satisfaction dims. His body curls in pain despite all attempts to avoid the danger.
The man/shadow/being rose. Anger, rage, control gave him power. He ignored the freedom of movement in the true world. The light sheltered him. Harm could not befall it.
Soon grubby hands grasped for wealth unseen; a fitting punishment. His light's love of games reminded him how to leash the shadows for his own purpose. No more would they torment him. All was well.
Author's Note: My muse is being aggravating in regards to 'Reclaiming Life'. I've decided to indulge it a bit to see if I can get better results. This is a little one shot that kept bothering me. I've taken liberity with the living status of Yugi's mother. I only know the generalities of YuGiOh and I've never seen her, so I'm keeping her as deceased.
