My mom was watching PBS and Berry Manilow was playing. He started singing this song and it screamed Sam and Dean to me.
Dean was having a rotten day. First his car was taken, again. If the search for it wasn't enough, Sam had gotten heart in their last hunt. Some stupid spirit threw him across the room. By the way his leg was swelling and how every time Sam tried to put weight on it he cringed, Dean would guess it was broken. This left Sam leaning heavily on Dean. As the boys were walking down the darkened highway Dean couldn't help but think of a song that their dad used to listen to.
The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows when
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
"Ok, he's a little heavy," Dean thought. His bother may have been a good six inches taller then him, but Dean could always bear his brother's weight.
So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
Dean wished he could just run ahead, find the car and come back to Sam. As much as it was tempting, just to get Sam off his feet, he knew he couldn't leave him out here by himself.
If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another
Sam started to groan and lean a little more on Dean. Dean stopped and turned towards Sam. "You okay buddy?" He asked with firmness but filled with concern. Sam looked up at Dean, nodded his head with a bit of a smile and edge Dean along to continue their walk.
It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on the way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
Dean could feel the sweat running down his forehead but knew if they stopped, Sam may not be able to start again. Dean thought about everything that had happened to them sense he brought Sam back from college. They lost so much but gained such a great relationship in return only for it to end when Dean's year was up.
He's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother...
