There were times that Kurama thought perhaps Kuronue had been reincarnated. Not often did this thought cross the fox's mind, but every now and then Hiei would do or say just the right thing to make him wonder.
One evening in particular found Kurama gazing out his window to see Hiei perched in the tree in his yard, smoking what had to be one of Yusuke's cigarettes. Emerald eyes blinked a few times. He had never seen Hiei smoke before, but it wasn't impossible. They had been through a trying few days, dealing with Maze Castle had been more of a head ache than expected.
And here he was, that little fire demon, breathing in the tobacco after a hard day's work.
Kurama had seen that elsewhere. If Kuronue had one flaw it was smoking. After a large heist or simply a day that hadn't gone to his liking the bird would find peace in smoking a pipe. In their younger days the fox had always teased him about such a need (even if he too enjoyed a pipe now and then) but never stopped him.
Tapping on his window brought the red head back to the present and he found a grumpy Hiei waiting to be let in. Moving to open the window he breathed in the smell of the smoke. It was unpleasant now days; humans polluted their tobacco heavily.
Grumbling about the displeasure of smoking and detectives Hiei made himself at home as he always did and Kurama had to smile. Even though he had the rare, bitter sweet thought that the crow might have been reincarnated Hiei was always there to assure him he hadn't.
