"What do you want?" Lily asked, tapping her foot impatiently on the stone floor. James swallowed nervously.

"I just… Um, I just wanted to…"

"Yes?" she cut in, her face setting into what seemed like a permanent frown. At least, it was to James. She never smiled in front of James. He looked down.

"I just wanted to ask if you were, you know. All right," he swallowed again, not daring to look back up at her face fearing the expression that might be there.

"I'm fine, Potter," she stated stiffly. "Is that all? Because I really need to get to potions class."

"Right. Sorry. I just… I'll see you later then, Lily," he looked up quickly, gave her what he hoped was a smile and ran off. She sighed as he did, smiling slightly.

"See you later, James."
