He'd long since gotten used to the sweat and the smells, even the food or the lack of a regular meal. But the noises...They took longer to drown out with thought; the ones you tried to ignore, but somehow couldn't. And maybe this was a good thing.
How long before the pitiful sounds were suddenly just another part of the atmosphere of the place? How long could one man stare at a dust covered ground, a guard's tower, a rat, before he was as mindless as that rodent chewing chocolate, mindless, or worse, one of the animals who loosely qualified as a fellow human being?
Squeezing his eyes closed Michael thought about the one place he had felt safe, the place he had visited so few times, but couldn't wait to get back to. Sara. Her arms around him, grounding him, making him feel like he could maybe redeem himself from this, maybe somehow reclaim the part of himself that was lost along the way…Slowly making him something he would someday loathe to be...
