Icy Winds
The icy winds whipped around my ankles as I raced across the fields of open grass, trying to get to the closer, more inward castle grounds. It was one of the rare occasions where the whole park was closed for a small camp session for four lucky kids who could have the run of the whole place along with maintenance as they worked on some of the rides and fixed up what they had to. So me and three guys were staying in the rooms above Cinderella's Castle for our little camp-like outing.
The open field was like a moorland, laced in thick fog and dotted with lush weeping willows whose limbs always caught me.
And maybe it was the fact of being a Kingdom Keeper that kept me on my toes on the park grounds, but something was definitely off. How often was it this foggy on the castle grounds? And why was it so cold when dusk had barely just passed?
The sun had only dipped below the horizon about fifteen minutes ago but it already seemed to have turned freezing and chills ran up my spine. The wind had never been this fierce before, but then again, no one was usually allowed here.
Dark shadows lingered in the fog ahead of me and I knew it wasn't one of the guys. It was too tall. But maintenance was always in the picture so I just ignored it, knowing that there was every single possibility in the world other than it being an evil Overtakers.
The icy wind clawed at my exposed skin, piercing my skin like freezing needles. I moved along a little faster, hoping to get back to the castle before the cold gave me a totally numb feeling. I could already feel my teeth chattering as if a cold rain was coming down. But there was no rain.
The figure in the blackness of the lost sun was becoming clearer in the damp fog. I could see a shape that was larger than any person I could think of.
And then I saw two ears. Two massive, round ears.
Relief washed over me and I kept moving, knowing that Mickey was about as much harm to me as a fly. As long as it wasn't carrying some crazy disease...
The cold only seemed to intensify. Shivers ran down my spine and goosebumps quickly sprouted up on my arms as the wind whistled through the distant willows. I could hear the thin branches rustling together.
Mickey's form was swiftly moving towards me, faster than I thought anyone could move in those crazy big costumes. And he was in full view moments later. I could pick out every detail of his tailcoats and the buttons on his collar and the big smile he wore that also functioned as the sight hole for the man who wore it.
A chilling icy feeling crept over me and Mickey and I were almost right next to each other when his shoulder bumped into mine and I was thrown off balance, staggering to one side. "Hey, watch it!" I growled, feeling anger boiling in me as it usually heated me up, but I was still left with this irresistable cold in my veins.
No sound came as Mickey stared at me for the longest time. His wrist flicked slightly and then he vanished off into the distance, continuing to walk where he had been heading previously.
Slowly, the cold began to subdue.
As my eyes widened, I began a sprinting race towards the castle to get to the room to grab my phone. I was up the stairs in a flash and I jumped on the bed in the room that I had been given. I found my phone in my bag and fished it out quickly before I dialed all the Kingdom Keepers at once so we could talk and I could tell them what had just happened. The minute they all picked up, my voice came out in series of harsh breaths. "Guys, I just ran into Maleficent in a Mickey costume."
