"Mako, I can't do this anymore, I thought maybe we could pull through but you've made it obvious that we can't." She said bitterly, glaring at him.
Mako ran a gloved hand through his hair, "Look Asami what do you want me to do? I can't just stop liking her." He pointed out.
"I know that, but you can't keep stringing me along! It hurts to be with you when the feeling isn't mutual." She admitted. She lowered her voice, "Look Mako, I will always love you but I can't do this anymore, I understand now that you will always love her more. Just stop putting me through this, I already have enough to deal with." She whispered and then walked off into the other room, brushing her shoulder against his as she left.
"Asami wait." He said, placing a hand on her shoulder.
She turned her head slightly to look at him, "What?" She said flatly and he grimaced at her tone.
"We can work through this Asami, we can make this work." He pleaded with her.
She turned around fully and narrowed her eyes, "No we can't Mako, can't you see? Every time we get stronger you just end up falling for her harder. I gave you chances, Mako, I told you to get your priorities straight and you didn't." She shot at him.
"And I'm sorry but you can't just forget someone that easily. I like Korra but I also like you a lot." He explained, looking at her with hose amber eyes of his.
She turned her head away, breaking the eye contact, "Then you'll just have to forget me anyway. I see how you look at her, Mako. You love her. You may like me but you love her." She reasoned with him.
His shoulders slumped and he removed his hand from her shoulder, I guess you're right," He trailed off.
She looked at him and placed a hand on his cheek, "Of course I am, now you need to go screw your head on straight and go get her." She said, giving him a warm smile.
He placed his hand on top of hers and asked, "Friends?"
She smiled and took away her hand, "Of course," She nodded, "Now go." She said, ushering to the direction in which Korra had left a few minutes prior. He smiled and ran out of the room. Asami stood there, looking at the spot where Mako had just stood.
They had just broken up; Asami had a tough time processing this even though she knew this was coming for a while now. She looked to the door that he had just left through; she knew he would come back through that door again, but the next he would be with Korra.
She would be here, too, standing in this same spot, but not as his girlfriend but as a friend. She would be there for him, but just not the same way as she had before.
What had happened to them? They were so strong once upon a time, and now they fell apart like a crumbling castle.
But I can build up another castle, Asami reminded herself. Castles may crumble, but they can also be rebuilt, though not the same but still a castle.
