She wasn't conspicuous; she was just a shadow in a sea of lights. But I noticed her. I saw her potential and tried to protect her, even when she almost killed me.

Some wonder how the soldier of life and the soldier of death can be friends, especially as close friends as we are. But they don't understand…

Everything needs an opposite to exist. Light and darkness, good and evil, life and death… They need each other. If there was no darkness, how would you know what light is? If there was no evil, what is good? Light needs darkness, just as darkness needs the light. They have to co-exist, because without the other, neither can exist. That's how I see it.

A shadow needs a light. Without a light, a shadow will just fade into the sea of faces. But when a light is near the shadow, the shadow becomes more defined. The shadow follows the light faithfully, blindly. It trusts the light completely, knowing that they will always be there for each other. It is content with just being by the light's side. No matter what, the shadow and the light are together.

Hotaru is the shadow; I am the light. She trusts me only as a true friend would. She trusts me as a shadow trusts a light. And even during her darkest hour, I stayed by her. I protected her from the outer senshi; they wanted to kill her just for being the senshi of Saturn. But it wasn't her fault that she was the soldier of death and destruction; she would only destroy the world if she must, which the other outer senshi did not understand. It was her duty, just as Pluto's job was to guard the Time Gate. Not even Pluto understood that. The other inner senshi were wary at first, but they tried to protect her as well. It was probably because they didn't want anyone to die more than any other reason.

Why didn't they understand her great sacrifice? They couldn't understand. Two of her attacks kill her along with the enemy. None of the other senshi ever had to take that risk just to protect the princess. She has to make that sacrifice to save the world. They only knew how to protect their princess, and didn't know how to care about anyone else. Besides, why would anyone care about the soldier of death and destruction, whose ultimate attack could destroy the world and everyone in it? But if they had destroyed her, the world would have been so different…

I am life; she is death. They all think it is impossible for life and death to be friends. But we must be on good terms. We continue the on-going circle of life. To keep the circle going, we must both exist. Life and death need each other, whether they like it or not. She destroys the world; I bring the new life.

We need each other just as a shadow and a light must both exist. They may never understand. But she is death, a shadow in a sea of lights; I am life, the light that the shadow needs.
