He hadn't actually thought Spike would pay him back. No, he would have never made it as long as he did in this job if he was that stupid.
He knew how this vampire worked, and he counted on Spike not being able to come up with the (literal, in this case) scratch. Because then what he'd have as payment was an IOU.
An IOU that would be worth far more than the runt-grade kittens he extended to the vampire. Especially with the kind of reputation Spike had these days.
Losing his own lackeys tonight didn't amount to much-they had been hired more for their willingness to do the work, not for their brains. But calling in a vampire who had eliminated two slayers, a Lei-Ach, a Ghora, and countless other demons he had heard about through the underground… That was worth something to him.
