I. Because she asked...

Rose stumbled blindly up the ramp, tears streaming silently down her cheeks.

The Doctor barely spared her a glance as he raced around the console, setting controls and checking readings. "Sit down and hold on tight!" he ordered tersely.

Rose complied, climbing onto the jump seat and hooking her arms around the headrest. After a few seemingly endless moments of shuddering around like a drunken carnival ride, the TARDIS gave a bone-jarring crash, then immediately settled down. The Doctor hauled himself upright and nodded in satisfaction at the new readings.

"We're home," he announced.

Rose didn't react to his words. She was still huddled in a little ball of misery on the jump seat.

The Doctor reached out to lightly touch her hair. "Rose? Did you hear me? We're home; back in our own universe. She'll need to drift in the vortex a bit, soak up some energy, but we're home."

"Tha's good," she mumbled dully.

He perched on the end of the seat and gently cupped her face in his hands. The pads of his thumbs brushed over her cheekbones, softly brushing away her tears. "Rose, are you hurt?" He'd healed some rope burns on her palms with the sonic during their zeppelin ride, but it was entirely possible he'd overlooked something else in their mad dash through the darkness.

"M'fine."

"You're not fine," he corrected, leaning in and pressing his lips to her forehead. He slid farther onto the seat and gathered her onto his lap.

Rose curled around him like a clinging vine, clutching her hands in his suit jacket. "I want…" Her voice trailed off, choked with fresh sobs.

"What do you want, Rose? Anything. Just tell me."

"I want my mum. I need…to see her…"

"Of course you do," he said soothingly. He rubbed comforting circles against Rose's back, feeling her body relax and grow heavier in his arms. "We'll just have a bit of a rest, first." He dropped a light kiss to the top of her head.
