Chapter One:
Prelude to Injury
Zuko, they called him. Banished Prince of the Fire Nation, another. A Disgrace, the third. So many names for one person, it was a burden many teenagers would have caved under.
The Prince himself bore the scars of his rejection, it was in fact large, and covered almost half of his face. It was the trophy won from duelling a Master, his Father, the King of the Fire Nation.
The Prince was, however, underneath his title, a young man. And as would any young man, he was confused, going through the most difficult period of his life. Being a teenager was a burden and a long, winding road of emotions. Zuko felt alone, unwanted, and held a powerful need to prove himself and reclaim his place in the Hierarchy.
His ticket into it was by capturing the century-elusive Avatar. The Avatar's story was well-known, as well as the legend. The avatar was a being who was capable of mastering all four elements: Air, Water, Earth and Fire. This was, a scary and needed thing. As with the symbolism, the nations often clashed due to their differences in opinions. The Avatar was seen and revered as the checks in balances between these nations. The Avatar, was also seen as a threat to any would-be conquerors.
And so, Zuko chases after the Avatar, who is nothing more than a twelve year-old boy. But this is not the tale of that useless charade. This is the tale of Zuko's Healing, of how he meets his equal, in the form of a beautiful water-bender named Katara.
