So this is yet another challenge fic. The prompt was smile, but… there wasn't very much smiling. It's also four words over the limit… Oops. Still, I'm super happy with it on it's own, away from the challenge. It made my mind come up with so many theories. Like what if Kushina is really pulling the strings behind Akatsuki, and Madara is only her front man type thing. I can't imagine any mother would be happy if her lover sealed a demon in her child, either. Kushina is certainly a woman scorned. Still, this is probably a very different image of her, but I'm totally okay with that. I quite like being unique.

Disclaimer: I wish I owned Naruto. I would be much happier with the plot if I did… That's actually probably a lie -.- I guarantee I would get writer's block and get even more pissed off with it than I am now.

The smile simply wouldn't leave her face. It didn't matter that outside this terribly small room her world was collapsing once more. The rest of the world didn't matter when the bright blue eyes of her son were staring up at her. Even the urgent, hushed whispers around her couldn't ruin her happiness. And contentment. It wasn't until the foreboding shadow of Tsunade crossed her bed that Kushina took her eyes off her newborn.

Immediately the woman from Whirlpool country knew something was terribly wrong from the great medic-nin's expression.

"Tsunade, what's happening?" Kushina demanded.

Tsunade simply stared mournfully at the woman. Kushina whipped her head in the direction of Jiraiya.

"What's happening?" she demanded once more, voice much more fierce this time. The baby Naruto reacted to his mother's agitation by starting to wail.

Refusing to meet Kushina's eyes, Jiraiya told her, "Minato is planning…"

Before he could even finish the statement, Kushina yelled, "That idiot!" Tears streamed down her face in unglamorous rivers, the droplets falling onto her child's cherubic face.

Hours passed, and Kushina could do nothing but lay uselessly in bed, waiting for the inevitable. She had tuned out the world around her, seeing only her child's face. Her maternal glee had been short-lived, being replaced by the all too familiar emptiness of utter heartbreak.

What could have been hours or only mere minutes, Kushina was jerked out of her trance by the renewed wails of her child. Her eyes burned with tears yet again as she felt the burning hot chakra of the Kyuubi envelope her son and watched as the intricate seal formed on his belly.

It was yet another hour until sunrise when Kushina donned her cloak and sneaked out of the hospital. She was going to find the one who could help her son. She didn't care if she had to sell her soul to the man, she would make Uchiha Madara do as she wished.

She no longer cared that Minato had implored her not to ever have contact with that man again. After all, Minato had broken his promise to her and used that damn jutsu.
