Lorna and Alex's eyes met, drifting across the space between them. Like the blackness which engulfed their tiny ship in the white fires of space, the silence was filled with questions, infinite tiny lines of unseen communication. Somewhere in that, a question was asked and answered.
Alex held his arms open, inviting Lorna to the canvas which hung securely from a metal frame. Lorna hesitated a moment longer, then swung herself over the side and closed her eyes as he placed a comforting arm around her.
Lorna let out a long breath. Being so close to Alex...she hadn't imagined it like this, or at all, ever. It was complicated- lots of tiny emotions to sift and filter through- but there was a warm comfort in her belly that had nothing to do with the alcohol she had drunk after dinner, and everything to do with the way their bodies were linked on that bed, scents mingling on the fabric.
Lorna drew the blanket over her and Alex and reached to turn off the light. They had both been alone for far too long, and now she was certain that she could be with him, not because she was alone, but because they belonged together. She was sure of it.
"Goodnight, Alex. I love you."
"I love you too, Lorna."
There were no more words said for a long time.
