Ok guys, so this is a fic about Opal Koboi, her steady decline into madness, and her demise. She is such an interesting character if you think about it, and so little is said about her past other than the fact that she competed with Foaly at the university, and was one of his greatest competitors, but why did Opal go insane? Why would Opal Koboi hate the LEP so badly?

Disclaimer:

I sadly do not own any of Eoin Colfer's wonderful work or characters.

Opal Koboi began packing yet another one of her many suitcases; she would be leaving for the University soon, and was greatly looking forward to it. She had always been the odd girl out, never being able to find interest in all the petty things the others had, but rather, she was intrigued and extremely interested in the way things worked, mathematics, and the designs of technology.

Opal sat on her suitcase so she could zip it shut, tomorrow she would leave to attend Haven's University of Engineering and Technology, and she couldn't wait. Giddy with the joy of finally being able to go to a school where she would be surrounded by people who shared her interests, Opal practically skipped down the stairwell that led to her houses entrance way.

"Opal dear, Come in here please!"

At the sound of her father's voice Opals blood ran cold, she had always been Daddy's little girl, but he had never agreed with her going to the University, insisting that Engineering and Technology was a "Man's line of work," and that a girl with social standing such as Opal had no place in the world that she so strongly knew she belonged in. Even though she was scheduled to leave tomorrow, she couldn't help but think her father was up to another one of his schemes to delay, or completely cancel what she had been dreaming of since she had laid eyes on her first computer.

Tucking glossy black lock of hair behind her ear, she stepped into his office.

"Yes Daddy?" She said, her voice dripping with unnecessary sweetness.

"Well, I just came across this letter you see, from that art institute I mentioned…"

But before he could finish Opal's smile faded and she cut him off.

"Daddy I'm going to the University, and that's final, I am leaving tomorrow."

The coldness in her voice startled Opal's father, of course Opal had thrown the occasional tantrum, being a child of a well standing and rich family, but she had never spoken to him with such coldness before.

"Well, dear, you see…" He began, but she finished for him.

"I'm glad this has been settled." With that she smiled again. "Wish me luck!"

Opal walked out of her fathers office and up to her room to fall sleep for the night, tomorrow would be a long and tiresome day, and who knew what her father might come up with to make her stay at home.
