castiel fights his way through the mass of black smoke and the crimson red of blood. he hears his brothers yells of pain and defeat, he can see his compainons fall. he knows there are not many left, that he is one of the few angels of his garrison left alive, one of the few who can acually save dean winchester.
the deeper castiel digs, the thicker the smoke gets, the brighter deans soul becomes. castiel and physically feel the luminous glow of the rightous mans soul.
when castiel finally breaks through the layer of pain and death and tourture to get to dean, he can see how hell has changed this man. when he was informed that he had to save dean winchester, he expected to fight for a man who had turned, who had suffered so many years in the pit to come out pure evil.
what he did not expect was to see a bright soul, barely affected by his years in the pit, trying to fight off demons.
/40 years of touture and he still trys to hunt/ castiel thought to himself.
castiel quickly eliminated the lower level hell spawn that surrounded the bright soul.
when castiel got to dean, who was crouched in the corner, he reached down to grab him and take him out of this god forsaken place. before he could touch this man, castiel arm was pushed out of the direction of dean.
"what are you doing?" deans voice sounded broken, lost, confused.
"god commanded that you be saved. this is not your destiny. you dont belong here." castiel said as if it was common sence.
"no." dean looked down at his hands .
castiel was becoming emensly confused.
"no?" castiel tilited his head in question.
"save someone else. some poor sap who sold his soul to save him wife from cancer. someone who deserves to be saved..." dean looks up at the angel infront of him "find my father and save him. sam deserves to see him again."
castiel was pleasently suprised to hear such foolishly nobel words falling from this mans lips.
"you dont think you deserve to be saved?" castiel kneels infront of dean so their at eye level.
"why should i? after all the terrible things ive done? why should i get a second chance?" dean wouldnt hold eye contact for more that a couple of seconds
"because we have work for you." castiel says simply
"havent i done enough work for one lifetime?" dean laughs to himself "no, i havent. because all the work ive done didnt make a difference." dean looked down at the knife by his feet
a ping of sympathy swam throught castiel being, for reasons he couldnt understand
"you have saved hundreds of people, dean. of course your work mattered. and you /do/ deserve to be saved." once again dean chuckled
"but i couldnt save the lives of the people that mattered to me. i couldnt save dad. i couldnt save sam."
castiel shook his head
"you did save your dad. and you did save sam."
dean looked at castiel in a confused manner
"your father spent the last decades of his life looking for the demon that killed your mother, once he died, you found that demon, and you killed it..." dean makes a barely audible sound in his throat "with sam, you sold your soul to get him back y-"
"because i was too much of a coward to live without him."
"so your going to let him live without you, when you have the chance for him to see you again?"
dean slowly processed what castiel has said to him.
"if i go with you, will you help me look out for sammy? make sure he doesnt get hurt?"
castiel slightly smiles.
"of course."
dean and castiel stand up at that same time, and once castiel put his hands on deans shoulder, they are both out of the pit.
