A/N: I don't own Xiaolin Showdown. Sadly.
I don't think Clay gets enough love, and he didn't get any from here either. Poor cowboy just doesn't seem to win (even with me). Anyways, on to the one-shot!

So what if he was now only a background noise in their world? So what if they loved each other? He knew it was bound to happen. Kimiko was intelligent and would obviously pick the person she thought was best for her.
Even if it wasn't him, no matter how many times he made it obvious he liked her, he respected her choice.
To him, it had been the inevitable.
He should of have known from the very beginning. She was as beautiful and tantalizing as fire, to behold but never to be touched by him. That's why the dragon of the wind fit so nicely with her. Because the dragon of the wind could touch her in ways earth just couldn't. Earth was only there to bear witness her power. To see her engulf him until it was only her he saw and nothing else. He was there to witness fire combine dangerously with air. Because fire could not exist without him, and because wind could not be truly free without touching her.
Because no matter how high earth tried to go, how many times it reached out for fire, it would always shrink back when burnt.
Earth was never meant to be with fire.
Fire consumed, and destroyed him.
No, fire killed him.
But he understood why she loved Rai.
It didn't take a genius to figure it out.
Realizing that he'd never have a chance with her didn't make the pain any less bearable though. He could still try and win her affections, but he refused to be stuck in a love triangle that was only remotely existent and plausible in his head.
Wind was free, boundless compared to rock. Air could take her places, make her glow and grow until there was only them, their power shaking the poor earth, who can only watch and envy them as it is completely consumed by their elements.
Earth can only envy them.
Because deep down he always knew he could never be with her. He had long fought and lost a battle that never subsisted.
But like his element, he'd only watched in envy as fire and air easily engulfed him, until all he could see now was their beautiful union, and his more than pathetic and painful loss.
And even though he loves them both dearly, envy is all Clay allows himself to feel towards their relationship. And maybe a tinge of regret that he could never do the things Rai could.
