Love Keeps its Promises
Mousewhisker was dreaming. His dream world was always cold and hazy; that's the way it had been ever since he was Mousekit. Now he was dreaming about what it would be like if his mother had stayed at the horseplace, if she had never set foot in down-to-earth ThunderClan. Then he would have never met Hollyleaf, the beautiful black she-cat who had just recently become a warrior. Mousewhisker felt himself blush in his sleep. He wondered if Hollyleaf liked him as much as he liked her.
Suddenly, Mousewhisker jolted upward, shaking the sleep from his furry head.It was time for the dawn patrol. Unfortunately, Hollyleaf was not in it as well. Hollyleaf. The name went over and over in Mousewhisker's thoughts all day long. He hadn't spoken to her much all day, but the soft, "How's the prey running?" and the small nod from her at sunhigh was enough to put Mousewhisker's head in a whirl. So when darkness came, he was ready to dream about Hollyleaf.
He cuddled in his nest of moss and let sleep overcome him. But instead of dreaming of Hollyleaf, Mousewhisker received a message from StarClan. In his dream, this is what happened: Mousewhisker blinked open his tired eyes and sat up. He was in a shady hollow, and an almost black starry figure was appearing before him. He rubbed his eye with the back of his paw.
"Ugh…Who are you?"
"I'm Yellowfang. Haven't you heard of me from those little stories the queens tell their kits in the nursery?" the cat teased.
"No…and why am I here? Were you sent from StarClan to give me a message?"
"Yes. Little one, do you ever think about Hollyleaf?"
Mousewhisker gasped. How did she know?
"Well, I have been looking down on the two of you. Let me tell you that you two were a match made in StarClan. Literally. I would like you to ask her to go hunting in the morning."
"Uhhh…Okay!!" Mousewhisker was clearly happy at the order of taking Hollyleaf hunting.
Yellowfang began to fade without a goodbye. Mousewhisker slid out of sleep right after she had vanished. He scrambled to his paws and dashed out of the warriors den to find Hollyleaf. She was sitting by the fresh kill pile, washing her black paws with a dainty tongue.
"Hollyleaf, want to go hunting together? Alone?" He wanted to bite himself. He shouldn't act so straight forward.
"Sure!" she said, hopping up instantly. "Listen, Mousewhisker, I had a dream last night…"
"Me too."
"It was Yellowfang…and she said…that…you and I were a match made in StarClan. I believe her. I love you, Mousewhisker. Always have."
"Same here," Mousewhisker sighed, letting his lips curl into a relieved smile.
And when they walked out of the entrance tunnel, their two pelts mingling together, Mousewhisker knew that the rest of his life would be a happy one.
