Dr. Hilary Slayton was a young woman in her mid 30's, she was rather thin of build with short dark hair and a medium complexion. She was in a white coat looking down at her patient, she looked way too young to be an obstetrician but nevertheless she was. Min and Johnny had arrived at Rampart and Min had been put in a bed and a baby heart monitor was strapped around her. She had on a light pink hospital gown and pink booties. Johnny was sitting on the edge of the bed holding her hand.

"Well Min, according to your husband your back was bothering you all day?"

Min nodded. "Yeah but it didn't feel like anything, it just hurt a little more than it had been."

The doctor looked at her. "You should have called the office, back pains are a sign of labor. You've been in early labor for most of the day."

The sound of the baby's heart was loud and thumping fast, she looked down at the machine. "He seems to be doing just fine, how about you? Besides the water breaking have you had any contractions?"

"A few."

Hilary looked at the paramedic. "Can you move to the chair Johnny I want to examine her?"

"Sure." Johnny still had his wife's hand, he moved to the chair next to the bed. Hilary flung back the sheet and put a glove on. "Lean back and take a deep breath."

Min did what she was asked and turned and looked at her husband. Hilary pulled the sheet back over her and took off her glove. "You're definitely in labor; I want to see if your contractions start on their own or if we have to give you Pitocin to get them going."

"Can we wait and see if they start?"

Hilary nodded. "Your water broke so you are in labor, we'll give you a few hours to see how it goes." The doctor looked at her husband. "Ever delivered a baby Johnny?"

The paramedic smiled. "A lot of them."

"Well you know the stages and what to expect." Hilary got off of the bed. "I'll be back to check on you in a few hours." She left the room and Min sighed, she closed her eyes and took some deep breaths.

"Nervous?" Johnny was rubbing her hand.

"Yeah." She turned and looked at him. "How do you feel?"

"Okay, so far."

Min got a contraction, it was really strong and she squeezed her husband's hand. "Just relax Min and breathe through it like they talked about in class."

The strength of it surprised her and reality finally hit her that she was really in labor, their son was coming and there was no stopping it. The contraction passed and she sighed and leaned back against the bed. "Wow that was big."

Johnny touched his hand to her belly. "He's definitely coming Min."

"I know but it feels like he's trying to come out my spine." She got another one and she gasped and used the breathing technique from the birthing class, it really did help and that surprised her. Once again the pain was gone and she relaxed. "Johnny, my back is really hurting can you rub it?"

Min hit the button on the side of the bed and it moved forward so she could sit up, she leaned over a little and Johnny put his hand on her lower back and rubbed it.

"Here?"

"Yeah that's the spot."

Johnny was rubbing her back hard. "You have been in labor all day and you didn't even know." He was trying to take her mind off of things.

Min got another contraction and she bit her lip. "I know I can't believe I didn't realize it. Okay you can stop rubbing my back."

Johnny did what she asked and she carefully turned on her left side, facing him, that position seemed to help her back. "What time is it?"

"2 30."

"I think you should call my brother."

"If you want me too."

"I do, please."

Johnny kissed his wife's hand and let go of it. He picked up the phone that was on the nightstand next to the bed and dialed her brother's phone number. Bo answered and sounded really tired, the club had barely closed.

"Bo, Johnny…we're at Rampart."

The voice on the other end of the line got very excited. "Really? When did it start?"

"Her water broke an hour ago."

"Oh man that's GREAT! Tell her I'll be down there in a little while."

Johnny nodded. "Okay, I'll tell her, bye."

Min had her hands on the bed railing, she was pulling on it every time she got a contraction, her knuckles were white. "What did he say?"

"He's on his way."

"Oh great, I didn't want him to see me like this." She got another contraction and she pulled hard on the rail and squinted her eyes. Johnny saw her and touched her hair. "Breathe through it Min."

It was gone again but she was still breathing hard. "Wow they make Braxton Hicks look like a walk in the park."

Johnny smiled; he was glad she was still keeping her sense of humor; he pried one of her hands off of the rail and held it. "You're doing really good."

His wife gave him a small smile. "I'm trying, you being here is a big help."

"Where else would I be?" He leaned forward and gave her a small kiss.

Over the course of the next few hours, Min continued to get strong contractions that were about 5-10 minutes apart. Dr. Slayton examined her and to her surprise she was dilated to three centimeters.

"Wow this kid means business." She covered Min back up with a sheet.

"What?" Min had gotten sweaty and Johnny was gently dabbing her face with a cold wash cloth.

"You're progressing pretty fast. Are you sure this is your first?"

"Positive."

"You're doing really well; do you want a little something for the pain?"

"Like what?"

"Oh a mild pain reliever should just take the edge off and make the contractions a little easier to take."

Min nodded. "Okay."

Bo had gotten there a little after 3 and was down in the cafeteria getting some coffee while Dr. Hilary examined his sister.

"All right I'll have the nurse bring it in for you."

Johnny laid the cold cloth against his wife's forehead. "How long do you think before she's ready to push?"

The doctor took off her glove. "Well if things continue like this we just might have a baby by brunch time, I'll go tell the nurse about the pain reliever." She left the room and Johnny looked at his wife, she looked very sweaty.

"Brunch time."

Min smiled, she still felt pretty good even though it felt like she was being sawed in half. "That's okay; I'll sleep while you guys have brunch."

Bo came back into the room with two cups of coffee and a cup of ice chips; he saw his sister and smiled. "Well what did I miss?"

Johnny took the cup of ice chips from him and gave his wife a few. "Dr. Slayton said she's progressing and he could be here by late morning."

Min was crunching on the ice, Johnny rubbed some of the pieces on her lips and that felt good, her lips were dry. "Late morning."

An older woman with gray hair came into the room with a syringe; she picked up Min's IV tubing. "Dr. Slayton said you wanted this?"

"Yes please."

The older woman smiled. "No problem." She put the needle into the tubing and injected the medicine into it. Min felt warmth go throughout her entire body and she sighed.

"Oh wow that feels better."

"You know we can always give you an epidural if the pain gets to be too much."

Min sighed. "I don't know, I want to see how I do without one those things tend to stall labor."

The nurse nodded. "True, okay, well whatever you decide is fine just let me know."

"Thank you."

She gave the young woman a nod and left the room.

By the time the sun came up, Min was in a lot more pain, her contractions were now coming harder and faster and she was trying hard not to let it frighten her. Her hair was drenched with sweat and her face had gotten a little pale. She still didn't want the drugs though and even Bo was beginning to get antsy. Johnny was doing all he could for his wife, he was trying not to let it show how affected he was by her pain but every gasp she uttered and every tiny moan she let escape went straight to his heart.

"Min, are you sure about the epidural?" He was stroking her face; her eyes were glassy and full of pain.

"I don't know."

Johnny licked his lips. "I think you should get it."

Bo got up from his chair and stood next to Johnny, he too was having a hard time seeing his little sister in pain. "He's right Min, you have been really brave but I think you need to get some relief."

Min got another strong pain and she squeezed her eyes shut. "Okay, tell the nurse."

Johnny closed his eyes, he was very relieved. Bo was too, he left the room and went to go find the nurse.

"You must think I'm a wimp."

Her husband's eyes flew open. "What?"

Min looked at her husband. "I said you must think I'm a wimp."

Johnny narrowed his eyes at her; he couldn't believe she had said that and shook his head slowly. "I don't think that, not one bit. I'm glad you're going to get it."

"Why are you glad?"

Johnny swallowed hard. "Because it's been killing me seeing you like this." He reached out and put both hands on her pale face. "You've suffered long enough; I want the pain to be over for you." He touched his forehead to hers.

Min sighed and closed her eyes. "I don't want you to be disappointed."

"No, I'm not and I don't think I ever could be."

She carefully put her arms around her husband's neck and hugged him, burying her head in his shoulder. "I love you."

"I love you too, we're almost there, soon we'll have our son."

"I know I can't wait to meet him."

Bo came back with a nurse and a very pretty long haired blond woman that looked like a model, the couple let go of each other and Bo was all smiles. "This is Dr. Hill, she's the anesthesiologist."

Min wiped her face, and looked at her. "You are?"

The blond woman nodded. "Yes I am, you want an epidural?"

"Yes."

"Okay, no problem, let me go get everything, I'll be right back."

The pretty woman and the nurse left and Bo watched her go, he shook his head. "Can you believe that? She's beautiful and has brains too, wow."

Min shook her head. "Down boy, she's probably married."

Bo turned around and looked at her. "Nope, she's single and she loves country music."

Min turned and looked at her husband. "His nephew is coming and all he cares about is getting a date with my anesthesiologist."

Johnny shook his head. "Don't look at me, he's your brother."

It was now almost 8 40, the epidural had made Min fall asleep. Johnny was sitting in the chair and was dialing the station; it rang twice and was picked up.

"Station 51, Fireman DeSoto."

"Hey Roy."

"Hi Johnny, what's going on?"

He smiled. "We're at Rampart, Min is in almost ready to give birth."

"That's great when did it start?"

"Well at one this morning she woke me up tossing and turning, she said her back was hurting. It had been hurting her since she woke up that morning and she didn't say anything."

"Back labor huh, and she didn't know?"

"No she didn't, I finally convinced her to go to Rampart and her water broke as she was changing, Dr. Slayton said she'd been in labor all day."

"Wow, so things are going pretty quick then huh?"

"Yeah, Min is asleep right now, she got an epidural, the doctor just checked her and we should be having the baby in the next hour or two depending on how the pushing goes. I just thought I would call and let you guys know."

"Good thing you took the whole week off."

"Yeah I know, talk about good timing."

"Okay Johnny, well good luck and let us know when he's born."

"Thanks Roy I will, talk to you soon, bye."

"Bye."

Bo came back in the room with a piece of paper in his hand, he was smiling widely. Johnny saw his face and set the phone back down on the nightstand. "Let me guess, she gave you her phone number?"

"Yup." Bo sighed as he folded it back up and tucked it into the pocket of his t-shirt. "Her name is Jenna."

"Uh huh."

Bo looked at his little sister, she was sound asleep. "She doing okay?"

"Yeah, Dr. Slayton said to let her sleep a little longer, then we'll be ready to start pushing."

"Are you excited?"

Johnny rubbed his hands over his face. "I just want everything to go okay; I want them both to come out of this with no problems."

"They will, Min is tough, and a fighter."

Dr. Slayton and a few people came into the room; she had on a gown over her coat and smiled at the paramedic. "Okay Johnny, let's bring your son into this world."

Johnny was sitting behind his wife; Min was between his legs and was leaning back against him. Her legs were in the stirrups. Bo was standing on the other side of the bed; he had hand on his sister's shoulder and was rubbing it. Dr. Slayton was on a stool at the foot of the bed, she had a protective shield over her face.

"Okay Min, this is what you are going to do. You're going to take a deep breath and tilt your head down with your chin against your chest and push, push down into your behind, use your husband any way you want too, okay?"

Because of the lateness of her epidural, Min felt no pain but she could feel that her son was very low now, she nodded. "Okay."

The nurses were all around the doctor and they had everything ready. Hilary looked up at the young woman. "Okay, ready?"

Min was scared and excited at the same time, she nodded. "Ready."

She took a deep breath and did what the doctor said with her chin was against her chest, she leaned back against Johnny and pushed. The nurses were all counting, when they reached 10 she stopped.

"That's good, again."

Min took another deep breath and did it again, her hands were touching Johnny's legs and she was gripping them a little. When ten was counted she took a fast breath and did it again. Johnny was touching her legs, he could feel how strong she was pushing.

"That's it Min, you're doing good." He kissed her cheek.

Dr. Slayton was doing something. "Okay take a small break."

Min stopped and was breathing hard. "I can feel him, he's low."

"He's very low."

Johnny let go of his wife's legs and touched her hands. "You're doing good, really good."

"Thanks."

Min turned and looked at her brother; he smiled at her and nodded.

"How ya feeling Min?"

"Good, I feel everything but pain."

The doctor was doing something that no one but her and the nurses could see. "That's good, are you ready for some more?"

"Yeah."

"Do you feel the contractions?

"A little."

"Okay on the next one start pushing again."

Min leaned back against her husband, she felt something. "Okay one is coming."

She took a deep breath and put her head down; she grabbed Johnny's legs and put everything she had into it.

"Oh wow that's good; a few more like that and you'll have a baby."

Min took another breath and did it again.

"Excellent Min keep it up."

Dr. Slayton raised her head and looked at Johnny; she smiled from behind her shield. "Want to see the head?"

Johnny's heart started beating hard. "You can see it?"

She gave him a nod. "Come on over here."

Min had stopped pushing and looked back at her husband. "Go ahead, its okay." She leaned forward so her husband could get out from behind her. He walked around the bed and his eyes got huge, he could see a lot of dark hair.

"Oh my God, I see dark hair."

Johnny went back and sat behind his wife, he put his hands under her legs. "Come on Min you're almost there, he's right there."

Min took another deep breath, the news he was so close boosted her energy. "One more, one more." She took a big breath and pushed. She felt something pass through her lower body.

There was a sound of small crying and Hilary smiled widely and stood up, she gently put a small baby on Min's chest. The young woman looked down at him.

"Oh my God…" She reached a shaky hand out and touched the face of the little squirming newborn. Her eyes filled with tears as she gently picked him up and held him closer to her looking down at him.

"Oh God Johnny, look at him." She closed her eyes and started crying hard so relieved that he was all right, that cry was the most beautiful sound she ever heard.

His little face was a mess and the nurses were cleaning it and the rest of him off, but she wasn't even paying attention to them. All she could see was that little face and hear that little cry. She looked back at Johnny and there were tears down his face as well, he reached out and touched his son. "He looks… like me."

Min was laughing and crying at the same time, he was very little and she couldn't believe he was here. Johnny touched his head that was full of dark hair, his hands were shaking as bad as hers were. "Hey little one." His voice sounded shaky.

"Here Johnny, hold him."

She moved aside and turned a little so he could, Johnny picked his son up, he put him against his t-shirt, he was very emotional and wiped his face. He gently touched the little baby's cheek.

"I can't believe this." Johnny looked at his wife; he too was laughing and crying as he kissed her.

Min turned back and looked at her brother, she had totally forgotten about him.

"Oh Bo, I'm so sorry."

Bo was casually wiping his face too. "It's okay." He leaned forward and kissed her on the cheek. "He's beautiful Min, you did great."

The couple was just there looking at the baby, at that moment neither one remembered about how tired they were. Min totally forgot the pain; she just kept touching his little face. Johnny closed his eyes and held both his wife and his son close to him, there were many emotions running through him but he couldn't give voice to a single one. He kissed his son on the cheek and kissed his wife on the head, there were no words to express what he was feeling.

Min was put in a room, she was dozing and her husband was asleep in the chair next to her bed. Bo had gone to spread the word. The door opened and the nurse came in wheeling the glass crib.

"Here is your little miracle."

The couple woke up and the nurse took the little tiny baby and gave him to his mother. "You did really good Min; he weighs 6 pounds 4 ounces and is 19 inches long."
Min took the little bundle; he had on a blue cap and was wrapped in some receiving blankets. "A little squirt aren't you?"

Johnny sat on the edge of the bed and touched his fingers. "He is not, he's perfect."

The nurse nodded. "He is beautiful, obviously he really wanted out his head isn't even misshapen." She reached out and touched his head gently. "Well I'll leave you all alone now."

"Thank you." Min called out to her as she walked away.

"You're welcome."

Min kissed his tiny cheek and handed him to his father. "Here you go."

Johnny sat down better on the bed and held him, he sighed. "9 months of waiting, I'm holding him and I still can't believe he's here."

"You and me both."

The paramedic looked at his wife. "You were great, you really were and I'm very proud of you."

Min smiled. "Thanks, I think you did great too."

"What did I do?"

"You were there for me and you made me feel brave, I couldn't have done it without you."

The baby started to cry and Johnny held him closer. "Hey now, no need for that, you're fine."

The infant quieted down and the brand new father smiled. "Hey, he knows my voice."

"Of course he does, you've only been talking to him since he was barely a few weeks old."

Min reached out and touched the little face. "Well, shall I tell you what I think his name should be?"

Johnny had totally forgotten about that. "Yeah, I'd like to know."

Min smiled widely, she looked at her baby and the name she had fit him perfectly. "Johnny, say hello to the little one."

He smiled at his baby and kissed his cheek. "Hello."

A tiny smile came to her lips. "Evan Ethan, say hello to your Daddy."

Johnny turned and looked at his wife, his eyes grew soft. "Evan? You want to name him Evan?"

Min nodded slowly. "After both of our fathers' middle names, that way his grandpas will be honored and they will protect him. What do you think?"

Johnny smiled and looked down at his son. "Evan Ethan Gage, I love it."

Bo came back into the room. "Okay the word is out."

Min motioned her brother over. "Want to hold your nephew?"

Bo smiled widely. "I'd be proud too." He took the little bundle from Johnny and smiled. "Oh wow he looks like you Johnny." Bo touched his little hand. "You are adorable."

"Say hello to your Uncle Bo, Evan."

The blond man looked at his sister. "Evan?"

Johnny put his arm around his wife and drew her to his chest. "Evan Ethan, after both of our fathers' middle names."

Bo felt a lump form in his throat. "I think Dad would have liked that." He looked down at the tiny baby. "Hi Evan."

Johnny reached over and picked up the phone. He dialed the station and heard the voice of his partner after the third ring.

"Hey Roy."

"Johnny! Well?"

He sighed and leaned back in the bed, his arm around Min's shoulders. "At 9 15 am, Evan Ethan Gage was born."

Roy got very excited and covered the phone. "Hey guys, Johnny's a dad!" Johnny smiled as he heard the sound of cheering in the background. "That's great Johnny Congratulations, how much did he weigh?"

"6 pounds 4 ounces, 19 inches long."

Roy covered the phone and was relaying the info to the rest of the station. "How's Min?"

"She's fine, she came through really well."

"Give her my best and I'll be by after work."

"I will, bye Roy."

"Bye Johnny, you did great, I told you you'd make it."

"You were right, thanks."

"You bet, bye."

Min had dozed off again, when she slowly opened her eyes the first thing she saw was her husband watching her. He was leaning over in his chair and smiled at her, there was great affection in his eyes.

"Hi, how do you feel?"

Min licked her lips. "Tired, but good."

"Any pain?"

"A little bit, but not too much." She closed her eyes and sighed. "It's okay though, he was worth it."

Johnny got off of his chair and sat down on her side of the bed; he leaned forward and rested his head against her chest. Min touched his hair and kissed his head. "How are you feeling Johnny?"

"Like the luckiest guy in the world."

"Really?"

Johnny lifted his head and looked at her. "Yeah I do." He closed his eyes and kissed his wife. "I'm never going to forget this day as long as I live, seeing Evan come into this world was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. I've delivered a lot of babies, but my mom was right, it was as different as night and day."

Min smiled at her husband and put her arms around his neck and hugged him. "I'll never forget it either, when Dr. Slayton put him on my chest and I saw that little face, Roy was right, everything that made me afraid went up in smoke." She opened her eyes and realized that the glass crib was gone, her heart started to beat hard and she pulled away from her husband. "Where's Evan?"

Johnny touched her face. "It's okay, take it easy, the nurse came and took him so the pediatrician can check him out he'll be back in a little while."

The nurse came in carrying a big crystal vase full of baby blue roses and a small package wrapped in plain brown paper. She set the vase down on the tray and moved it closer to Min. "These just came for you."

Min reached up and took the card off of the flowers. "How odd, I've never seen blue roses." She opened the card and read it out loud. "Congratulations on your little bundle of joy, give Evan Ethan a great big kiss from the both of us and we'll see you as soon as we get back, Love Mac & Gillian. PS. Tell Johnny to save one of these for me. Mac."

"The crystal ball on two legs strikes again." Min picked up the package and unwrapped a cigar box, she lifted the lid and started laughing.

Johnny saw her laughing. "What?"

She handed him the box. "It's a box of 50 bubble gum cigars."

Johnny picked one up; it was blue and said It's a Boy! "I thought real cigars were more traditional."

Min shook her head. "This is MacGyver we're talking about." She looked at the big vase of roses. "Those two are something else, but you gotta love them."

Evan came back into the room an hour later and Min was holding him. She was looking down at her son, he did look exactly like his father but his eyes were more like hers. Johnny and Bo had gone down to the cafeteria to get some coffee and a few snacks. Min was not going to be allowed to eat until dinner time, the doctor didn't want her to eat yet because of the epidural, the nurse came in and saw her holding her baby. "Hi."

Min smiled at her. "Hi."

She walked over to the bed and looked down at the tiny baby. "Have you decided on his name?"

"Evan."

The nurse smiled. "Evan, I like it." She checked the time and it was almost 2. "You know in a little while you could try and feed him."

Min nodded. "Yeah we'll give it a try."

Evan had his little eyes open and Min smiled, they were dark, she figured they would be after all both her and Johnny had dark eyes. "Hi, little one."

The baby yawned and it made Min laugh. "Been through a lot today huh? I know what you mean."

The nurse touched Min on the arm. "Well I better leave you two alone; if you need anything call me."

"I will, thanks."

She left the room and once again it was just Mom and baby.

"Well Evan, it's just you and me don't worry your Dad will be back soon."

Min leaned forward and kissed her son on the head. "I can't believe you're really here." She reached down and touched her flat stomach. "I'm so used to touching you here but you aren't there anymore, it's going to take some time to get used to that."

Evan started to cry and Min held him close to her. "Aww its okay Honey, your Mommy's got you. Shh it's okay." He quieted back down. "You know who your Mom is don't you?"

The door opened and much to Min's surprise, it was Dixie McCall, Dr. Brackett and Dr. Early, she saw all of them and smiled. "Hi."

Dixie walked over to the side of her bed. "Hilary told us you were here so we thought we would drop by."

Min was holding Evan against her chest and patting his back, her face was very proud. "Would you like to see him?"

Dr. Brackett put his hands in his pockets. "Well we didn't come all the way up here just to ignore our patients."

Joe Early shook his head. "Be nice Kel."

Dixie also scolded him. "You leave Min alone she's had a tough day."

Min carefully moved Evan away from her chest and handed him to the nurse. "Here he is."

Dixie looked into his little face and gasped. "Wow, he is the spitting image of Johnny." She showed the baby to the two doctors.

"Yup, that's a Gage face all right."

Joe looked at Min and then back at Evan. "Well not totally, he has his mom's eyes."

Dixie nodded. "You're right Joe he does, what's his name Min?"

Min smiled. "Evan Ethan."

The door opened and Johnny and Bo were back, he saw the convention of people in the room.

"Hi."

The three medical people turned around and saw him; Kel stuck out his hand first. "Congratulations Johnny, you got a fine son."

The new father smiled widely. "Thanks Doc."

"Kel's right Johnny, he's adorable." Joe shook his hand. "He looks just like you."

"Yeah that's what I think too."

Dixie gave the baby back to his mother and hugged the paramedic. "Congratulations Johnny he's beautiful."

Johnny returned her hug. "Thanks Dix."

The day progressed on, Min was able to feed her son with very little difficulty and she herself was finally allowed to eat. The young woman was starving and had finished her dinner and asked for seconds. Bo went home finally, he was tired but he promised to be back first thing in the morning. At a little after 6, the door opened and Roy and the rest of 51 all came in. Min and Johnny had fallen asleep; Johnny was holding Evan against his chest. The paramedic was sleeping in the chair next to the bed and Roy walked over to it and touched him on the shoulder.

"Johnny?"

The paramedic jumped, he saw everyone and rubbed his eyes. "Hi." He reached over and touched Min on the shoulder and she woke up and saw the crowd of men. "Hi guys."

Roy handed her a bouquet of white carnations and a card. "Here you go."

"Aww thanks, you didn't have to do that."

"It's from all of us."

Min smiled and looked at her husband. "Go on Honey, show them Evan."

Johnny stood up, he put his hand on his son's back, he walked over to the group of men and carefully handed him to Roy. "Here you go."

Roy took the baby and looked at him, he smiled widely. "Hi Evan." The baby made a small noise and Roy laughed. "He's beautiful Johnny, you can definitely tell who his father is."

Chet moved close to the baby. "You're right, it is obvious." The fireman shook his head. "You poor kid!" He gave Johnny a smile, telling him that he was teasing.

"Can I hold him Roy?" Captain Stanley stuck out his arms and Roy passed the baby to him.

"He's so tiny, what did he weigh again?"

Johnny crossed his arms over his chest. "6 pounds 4 ounces."

Hank was playing with Evan's small fingers. "You are a little guy aren't you?"

Mike got to hold the baby next. "He may be little now but he'll grow."

Chet nodded. "That's right; he'll get big and strong, like his mother."

Marco took the baby from Mike. "Well just for that you don't get to hold Evan."

Chet's face grew disappointed. "Aw come on I want to hold him." He turned around and looked at the baby's father. "Come on Gage you know I was just playing with you."

Johnny sighed. "Marco, go ahead and let Chet hold him."

Marco reluctantly gave the baby to Chet, the mustached fireman smiled. "He really is something Johnny."

"Thanks." He remembered the box of cigars; they were sitting on the night stand. He opened it and started passing them out.

'Bubblegum? Where did you get these?"

Johnny shook his head. "They were a gift from some out of town friends, Chet."

Roy stood beside his partner; he put his hand on his shoulder and sighed. "Well, its over Partner, how do you feel?"

Johnny gave Roy a wide smile. "Like I'm on top of the world."

Roy nodded; he knew exactly what that was like. "I know I've been there a couple of times myself."

"You were right, I'm not scared anymore, not one bit."

"The worst part of it is over now Johnny."

Johnny's face grew serious. "It was tough seeing Min hurting so bad and not being able to do much to help her really upset me."

Roy took a quick glance over at Min; she was watching the firemen play with her son. She was smiling; the look of the men with her tiny baby tickled her.

"She seems to be just fine."

"Oh she is, she really did great, never complained or whined or anything even when the pain was at its worst."

"She's got a lot of guts Johnny look at all she's been through; the birth was probably easier to take then her mother leaving her."

Johnny smiled, he looked so proud as he gazed at his wife. "She the gutsiest person I've ever known."

The night came and to everyone's surprise, Min carefully got out of bed and walked. Her legs felt a little shaky those first few steps but she did really well. She was tired of being in bed and decided to go for a small stroll. Dr. Slayton was just as surprised when the elevator doors opened and she met her patient almost head on.

"Hi, walking around huh?"

Min had been put in a clean hospital gown following the birth, it was white, she had brought her robe from home and had it over the gown. "Yeah, I just couldn't be in bed anymore."

"Let me walk you back to your room."

Hilary took her arm and the two women went back to her room and Min sat down on the bed. "Did it hurt to walk?"

Min shrugged. "Well a little, I mean a baby came out of me, I didn't expect to just get up and run totally pain free."

Johnny was asleep again, he was leaning back in the chair, Evan was against him and the baby was asleep too. Hilary looked at them both and smiled. "They look adorable that way."

Min smiled. "Don't they?" She looked at the doctor. "Everything went okay right? I mean I don't have stitches or anything?"

Hilary shook her head. "No you don't, he was very small so there was no need for that everything went very smoothly."

"So when do you think I can go home?"

"Well Evan needs to be here a full 24 hours. He's already been thoroughly checked out by both myself and Dr. Hanson, she's the pediatrician you and Johnny chose. So I'm guessing that probably by tomorrow afternoon you'll go home."

Min sighed in relief. "That's good, I'm glad."

She carefully scooted back on the bed and laid down, Hilary helped her and smiled. "You did great Min, you both did."

"Thanks Doctor."

She reached out and patted Min's arm. "I'll see you in the morning, that's when we'll see if your body is getting back on track, and you'll be able to take a shower."

Min smiled. "Good, I really feel like I need one."

Hilary laughed and squeezed her hand. "See you later Min."

"Bye Doctor."

Min got out of bed again and walked over to her husband and son; she reached out and touched Johnny's face. "Johnny?"

The paramedic slowly opened his eyes and saw his wife; he also saw that she was standing. "What are you doing out of bed?"

"Just walking around."

"Are you supposed to be doing that?"

"Dr. Slayton was just here."

Johnny rubbed his eyes. "What did she say?"

"That we can probably go home tomorrow afternoon."

Johnny shifted in his chair and groaned. "That's good; I don't think I can take sleeping in this chair anymore."

Min reached down and took Evan from her husband and carefully put him in his glass crib, she leaned over and kissed him. "Night Evan."

Min walked back over to her husband and picked up his hand, she gave it a tug. "Come with me."

"Where?"

Johnny got up and Min led him over to her hospital bed, she climbed in and moved over patting it.

"Come on."

Johnny climbed into the bed and laid down, the bed felt much better than that chair, he sighed. The couple was now laying side by side, facing each other.

"You should have heard my mom when I called her, she was yelling on the phone."

Min smiled. "Really?"

"Yeah, she wants us to take some photos of Evan and send them overnight to her."

"We can do that."

Johnny yawned and rubbed his face. "Boy I'm beat; it's been quite a day."

Min nodded. "Yeah it has, but a good one."

She scooted closer to her husband and put her head down on his chest; Johnny put his arms around her and held her. "It's been the best."

Min lifted her head and pressed her lips against her husband's, she gave him a sweet kiss that was full of love. Their lips parted and she smiled at him. "I love you so much Johnny."

Johnny gave her a wide smile; he touched his forehead to hers. "I love you Min, we really are a family now."

Evan started to cry and Johnny turned over and got up. He brought the baby back to the small bed, in between them both. Min touched her son on the cheek. "Its okay Angel we're right here, your parents got you."

Johnny kissed his son on the head and touched his little fingers, the baby gripped Johnny's finger and it made the paramedic smile widely. The baby settled down and closed his eyes, in a matter of minutes he was asleep again.

Min looked at her husband. "I guess he didn't feel safe."

"I guess not." He yawned and rubbed his hand down his face. "What do you say we turn in?"

Min nodded, she too felt tired. "Good idea."

The nurse came in an hour later to check on Min, she saw that her husband was in the bed with her and in between the couple was the baby. They both were touching him, Johnny had his hand and Min had her hand on his little chest. All three of them were sound asleep; the nurse picked up the sheet and the blanket and covered them partially up.

"Good night."

She smiled at all of them and quietly walked out of the room.

END.
