Snow. The small flurries outside the window. Falling down toward the Earth. Dancing in the wind. Flying. Snow would be flying. It would go so high in the air and come crashing down. Snow and hope would be everywhere.
On his head, a small crown of crystallized water, frozen in the forms of stars. Snowflakes drifting and greeting everyone. Happiness. That happy fluttering feeling in your stomach, he would feel it too. A small breeze kissing his skin. The only warmth is in his heart, for once.
He smiles because he is happy. He is growing up and the childish innocence like snow, won't be there anymore. The true feeling of hugs will disappear to and just be a weird touch, a touch of something that he has forgotten. Looking up at the moon, a rare smile split across his face.
"Thank you," was whispered into the wind. A small shuffle behind him, made a small tilt come to his body.
"Why are you here? The cold is uncomfortable for you," his voice soft and dreamy. The figure huffed yet sat next to the younger boy.
"Not all cold is bad, I guess," was the gruff reply. "Why you out here anyway Frostbite?"
"Because I like the snow. How it falls so silently yet every snowflake has its on design, shattered by Earth herself,"
"And that explains what-"
"It's my birthday," the snow child interrupted. Aster blinked in response. "I was born on a leap year. My little sister tried celebrating my birthday every year but I wouldn't let her,"
"Why?" Aster asked.
"Then it wouldn't be special now would it," the snow child answered. Aster sighed, accepting that he still probably wouldn't understand, even if the kid explains it to him any other way.
"So yer younger than we thought?"
"Yes. Just like how the snow is new everyday, it is reborn. I am born at the beginning of spring," the spring giver furrowed his eyebrows.
"That doesn't make sense, mate,"
"Yes it does. My birthday is rare, just like the snow I create and the snowflakes I design. Each is different and not one is the same,"
"But your a-"
"I know. I guess that means I'm even more special," the child gave his friend a closed eyed smile before turning back to the moon, it's beams lighting up the pale face of a young boy who has risked everything and asked nothing in return.
"Is that why you saved her?" Aster asked.
"I saved her, so she would have another birthday the next year. I wouldn't have had one anyway. I would of had to wait another year,"
"That's why you took her place,"
"She was my sister, I wasn't going to let her drown," snow child answered, slightly peeved.
"But you died frosty. How are you so ok with that?"
"Because I gave her another year, a chance. She had a life set for her. Mine was set here,"
Silence overtook both of them for a while. The small white chills settled on Aster's shoulders, causing the spring spirit to shiver.
"You should probably go," snow said softly to his companion. "Your getting cold,"
"Nah, mate," Aster shook his head. "I can't leave ya all alone on yer birthday. Got to make it special somehow,"
"It comes every four years," a thin pale eyebrow rose at Spring. "Isn't that special enough?"
"To your sister it ain't so it ain't to me. C'mon, it's bloody cold out here and I just want this early snow to stop,"
"It is leap day. Crazy things happen," Snow chuckled.
"Yeah yeah alright mate, let's get headin," Spring sprinted off in the other direction, toward a place they both can easily call home. Snow paused and looked back up at the moon. The same serene smile met his lips and whispered again,
"Thank you," before treading after his companion. In his footfalls a small beam from the moon fell into the ground and grew a Snow White Lily where the too companions stood, hope and fun creating the simpleness of Joy in a birthday.
