"Don't make me go," Alice whined, but she let Alfred help her into her coat anyway. "You know I don't like shopping." She glowered over at her fiance who just chuckled at her.
"I know, but you have to meet my sister sometime before we actually get married," Alfred pecked Alice lightly on the lips. "You'll like her. I'm sure of it."
Alice just glared at the other blond who was smiling warmly at her. It wasn't like she could say too much. Alfred had gone to meet her own brothers after all, and he'd been fairly civil about it.
The knock at the door startled Alice harshly. She shot one finally glare at Alfred who just laughed. "Play nice."
She yanked open the door, met by a scantily clad blonde. She was wearing a low hanging tank with a leather jacket thrown over her shoulders. Her shorts were so, well, short, that Alice couldn't help but wonder how she even fit in them. And Alice had thought that she'd dressed fairly liberally.
"Alice!" Amelia exclaimed, throwing her arms around her brother's fiance. All right, Alice could understand that they were related. When she pulled away Amelia frowned. "You're a bit overdressed aren't you?"
"Alice is always like that," Alfred lept in to keep a fight from happening so soon. He laughed before tugging Alice close and kissing her lightly. "You two have fun!"
"We will!" Amelia called to her brother.
She was quick to get in the car, and all too soon they were pulling away from the house. Alice looked up longingly at Alfred standing up on the porch. He just waved warmly at her, but he couldn't help but wonder which of the two would come out alive.
All right, so maybe the day wasn't turning out too badly. Alice immediately picked up on the similarities between Amelia and her brother. While it wasn't as good as having Alfred there with her it made everything more bearable.
"I'll be going to the Italian place over there," Alice told Amelia. "Shall I meet you there when you're finished ordering?"
"We'll meet at the table here," Amelia decided with that all-too-happy Jones smile of her's. Alice didn't feel there was anything wrong with that, so she agreed.
When the Englishwoman came back, she was surprised to see Amelia opening up a little salad. There were no burgers in sight. Maybe she was different than her brother after all. Alice was sure Amelia would have gone to McDonald's.
Before Alice could question her about how she could eat healthy while her brother couldn't, she said bluntly, "You need to stop seeing my brother."
Alice sputtered, "What? We're engaged, it's a little late for that now," she protested.
"It's never too late, that's what divorce is for. I just don't want the two of you to go through all that extra time. Your relationship is a sinking ship, after all. I don't want him to realize he doesn't love you after you're married."
Angrily Alice rose to her feet. "How dare you! I just met you today, you have no room to pass judgment over our relationship!" So much for the day not being so bad.
"Don't be that way, Alice, look at all the evidence," Amelia tried - and failed - to reason. "The two of you have no common interests, similar tastes in anything! How do you think it will work? All the cards are stacked against you."
Alice had asked herself the same question over the years. She knew all the evidence; she analyzed it every day herself. A faint smile came to the blonde's lips. "What's love without a bit of a challenge?" The same answer Alfred gave her every time she had doubts.
Amelia smiled at Alice's retreating figure. "Maybe they're not so different after all."
