A/N: This was inspired by Sugar Skulls' fanfic "As Long As It's About Me" and from watching a few too many BasilxOlivia fanvids on the YouTube. Yes, I will be portraying Olivia and Basil at roughly the same ages they were in the movie. So, if that bothers you, you probably shouldn't read this. But if you read it anyway and it still bothers you and you feel the need to tell me in some harsh manner, you're welcome to go right ahead.
And just so you know, this won't contain anything graphic.
A Blurring of the Line
Prologue: Her Heart
"I'll never forget you."
Those were the words she'd parted with the day she left for Scotland. It's been nearly a year since then. That's not much time at all to forget someone, especially the mouse who'd saved her father, but Basil never could've known the true depth of her words. He never knew how much she thought of him, how much she thanked him in her heart for all he did. Her mind wandered to him more and more often, and the more it did, the more her feelings changed and grew to the point she was sure she was in love.
Olivia would lie in bed at night and wonder of all the adventures he'd had in her absence. She even dreamed of being a detective herself when she grew up. But all her imaginings were bittersweet, for they all ended with the poignant longing to see him again. He wasn't far; he was only a train ticket away. Yet for her, it seemed as though he might as well be on the other side of the world.
Olivia dearly missed her hero of a mouse and though she kept it to herself, her father Hiram could sense something was amiss. He could tell her heart was still in London. In fact, his was too, for it was within that very city he lost his wife, Olivia's mother, to a mysterious illness. He knew she loved her, but Olivia's memories of her mother were faint and spotty so he doubted she was the cause of her melancholy, solely or not. Even so, the cause was not the issue. What mattered was that his daughter belonged in London, that much was clear. And if it meant her happiness, he was more than willing to oblige.
On a particularly crisp Spring evening, as the two were sitting down for supper, Hiram asked his daughter how she would feel about moving back to England's regal capital. To no surprise, she was ecstatic.
Olivia stifled a gasp as a broad, expectant grin claimed her adorable features. "We're moving? We're really moving back?"
"If it's what you want, my bairn."
"Oh, it is Father."
"Then, it's settled," he smiled, "We'll be moving next month." He couldn't help but feel proud of his decision after seeing that reaction.
Olivia promptly jumped out of her chair and hugged her father as tight as her tiny arms could. "Thank you, Daddy!"
Despite the suddenness of the embrace, Hiram was quick to return it. Unpredictable hugs was something he'd come to expect from his affectionate daughter.
It took a moment for the girl to clear through the excitement of the news' implications and confirm her hopes. "Does this mean we'll get to see Basil again?"
"Of course," he said chuckling, "and Dr. Dawson if we can find him."
She could barely contain the happiness bubbling inside of her. Her wish had finally come true. In just a few short weeks, she would be reunited with him, the great detective, her hero and the love of her short life. It was absolutely perfect…or so it seemed. Though it was unbeknownst to her, or anyone else for that matter, their reunion would unwittingly be the source of Basil's greatest dilemma to date. Ironically, that dilemma had nothing to do with a case…
