I heard this song, 'The Balloon Song' by Mark Wills the other day. It broke my heart. I hope you enjoy this fic. I just couldn't get this song out of my head, I had to write a fic based on it. Review!
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
It had been unexpected. The car crash, the drunk driver. She had died on impact. She left behind her son, and his father. Rebecca was missed by all, and now it was up to Booth to get the arrangements for the funeral.
"Parker, do you remember Bones? She's going to watch you for today. Be good, okay?" Booth told his son.
Booth turned to Brennan. "Bones, you don't know what it-" he started.
"It's ok, Booth. I understand." she said, a sad look on her face. Not pitying, just understanding.
She knelt down to Parker's level. "Hi Parker."
"Hi." said the little boy shyly.
"You can call me Tempe." She held out her larger hand to his small one. He took it, and she asked. "Are you ready to go?" Parker nodded, and they headed out the door. Booth watched them with a lump in his throat, both for the loss of Rebecca, and for seeing Brennan interact so well with his son.
I
told him I'd watch his boy for the day
And we had a ball playin'
games, eatin' dogs
Riding rides at the county fair
"Was that fun?" asked Brennan, holding Parker's hand as they got off the Farris Wheel. He nodded enthusiastically, holding onto the big yellow balloon. They got back in the car and headed to Brennan's apartment.
I thought he was just
being a kid
When we got back to my place
And he did what he
did
On a balloon that he won
He wrote "Mama I had
fun
I missed you and I wished you were there."
I wasn't sure
what he had in mind
'Till he jumped up and ran outside
Brennan watched incredulously as Parker scribbled the message on to the balloon. She followed him as he ran out onto her balcony and released the balloon.
And he let it go, he
waved goodbye, or was it hello?
I don't know but I died inside
I
can still see his excitement
Him pointing and smilin'
When it
was gone as it could get
He turned and asked me
You think it's
in Heaven yet?
After the balloon was gone, Parker turned to Brennan, and asked, 'Do you think it's in Heaven yet?"
Well I struggled for
something to say
I was too choked up and
Lackin' the kind of
faith he had in his heart
Before I could start
He walked me
back inside
He gave me his Crayola pen
Said, I bet there's a
message that you'd like to send
Brennan was so choked up with emotion, she couldn't think of something to say. Before she could say anything, he grabbed her hand in his small one and pulled her back inside. He wordlessly gave her the crayon, and a balloon. Brennan took it, and cocked her head, not understanding.
"Do you want to say something to your mommy?" asked Parker innocently.
"How did you--?"
"I've
never seen you're mommy, and I heard Daddy talking about how your
mommy wasn't here." he replied simply.
And no doubt he was
right it's been locked
Up inside since Mother said goodbye
I
took that yellow balloon and I wrote
'Til I ran out of room then
Brennan gripped the crayon with a new determination. She wrote and wrote, as Parker waited patiently. Then, when she was finished, they both ran outside again, and she let the balloon go. It floated lazily through the air, and they waved goodbye.
I let it go and we
waved goodbye
That seven year old
Lord he opened my eyes
I
can still see his excitement
Him pointing and smiling'
When it
was gone as it could get
I turned and asked him
You think it's
in Heaven yet?
