Burden
Ice cold eyes and a shaking voice, hurling steady accusations at him; so full of defiance, so full of the certainty of being wronged.
He was thinking of Sonja before she uttered the word daughter.
"Your own flesh and blood."
He took so much from her. He took so much from himself.
All their doubting eyes, their doubting schemes; that silenced them. They didn't dare question him when the ashes of his own heir scattered the ground before his throne.
They doubted his decisions. They doubted his leadership. They doubted his loyalty.
All because of one mistake.
It was all because of one mistake.
He could have ended it all before the very seeds of it were planted. He could have delivered the deathblow to the entire war. Saved his daughter, saved his people, saved the little one before him a cold life of immortality without her family.
But when he looked at the corpse wearing his daughter's necklace, he didn't see the traitorous slave running him through.
There were warm eyes and a happy gurgle and no accusations, no knowledge of what was taken, what might have been taken. He just saw a baby boy, smiling at him.
If only he'd seen the corpse.
