Prologue

The steam of the Hogwarts Express caused the platform in Kings Cross to fog up as Cassiopeia stood watching the magnificent train in awe. Students of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry took the train at the start of their first year, but for Cassiopeia Black, she was not there to leave for school. She was in fact there to bid farewell to her elder cousins as well as to catch a glimpse of the Express in all its glory.

Although she would be eleven soon, Cassiopeia could not go with them since her birthday, along with her twin brother Sirius, fell after the cutoff for attending the prestigious school. She was disappointed to find that due to a 23 day difference, she would have to wait another year before stepping foot into the castle.

Andromeda, the middle daughter of her uncle Cygnus, was the only one who had not abandoned her once they arrived at the station. She was also the only one who understand all too well how Cassiopeia was feeling, since her birthday did not make the cutoff when she had turned eleven.

"It won't be long until you're there," reassured Andromeda. "A year goes faster than you think."

"But Andy, my birthday is only twenty three days away," whined Cass. "I bet I could convince grandfather Arcturus to pull some strings with the school board. Maybe he could even talk to Dumbledore himself."

"Rules are rules, love. Hogwarts A History specifically states that those under the age of eleven, after the end of August, have to wait for the next school year to start," declared Andromeda matter of factly.

"Well that's a rubbish rule isn't it? I'll be much too smart to be a first year by the time September rolls around again!"

"Maybe you'll even be sorted into Ravenclaw house," Andromeda laughed wholeheartedly as she gave Cass one last hug.

"Mum would rather blast me off the family tapestry before I'm sorted anywhere besides Slytherin," she responded in horror. "Remember to write to me every week," cried Cass as her cousin boarded the train.

"Will do, love. See you at Christmas!"

"Goodbye," screamed Cass over the last whistle. She watched the train pulled out of the station as it grew smaller and smaller. "Just one more year," thought Cass. "One more year before I'm there too."
