She stares absently at the train as the first warning whistle sounds, toying with one of her earrings and feeling strangely happier than she's ever been and yet lonely. She wonders how long it will be until the brothers come backâhow long she'll be waiting this time. But at least now she knows there is something to wait for.
Suddenly a window a few cars down is thrown open. "Winry!" she blinks in startlement and shakes her head to clear her vision. Ed is leaning out of the window, a determined look on his face. She drops her hand to her side and starts walking toward him, a little hurriedly, because just then the second whistle blows. She reaches his car and looks up at him, beginning "Wha-" red faced, he leans forward hastily and presses his lips into hers. When he sits back she stares at him, a little wide-eyed. He keeps his eyes locked on hers and smiles a wry, almost smug smile, then breaks into a grin of pure happiness as the train begins to move. Slowly, she smiles back and gives him a little wave. As the train picks up speed, he turns back around in his seat, so he is facing away from her. But before it fades from sight, she can see him rub the back of his head and then lift his hand through the window in a farewell salute.
