Luke curled his body into the tightest ball he could manage. Sweat was pouring off of his body as the unbearable pain still thrashed against his temples. He clamped his eyes shut and pressed his fists deep into the sides of head trying to relieve himself of the nightmare. I could feel flames devouring his brain as his head was about to explode. He cried out, on the floor of his room, wishing for it to stop. Then just as quickly as it arrived, the pain vanished. His mind was still a little foggy but the pain was completely gone. He lay there, still. Not wanting to move in case it came back and hit him even harder this time. After what seemed like hours past and the pain had not returned. His mind was now fresh and clear and he was just a boy on the floor. He slowly peeled open his eyes to find the blinding light in his room and shook his hands off of his head. He sat up, every part of his body aching from the tension. What had happened? Was he having some kind of melt down? He arose from the floor and stretched his limbs. He was still in his pyjamas and figured that since no one had come to his rescue, he was alone. Maybe it was just a bad dream and he had dreamt the pain. The aching in his limbs was just from the deep sleep.
But Luke didn't dream.
He brushed the subject aside and dressed quickly. He was late for meeting Clyde at the park. They were supposed to be comparing maths notes but Luke knew Clyde too well to think that he would ever do maths, voluntarily at that.
He hurried out the door and made haste towards the park. He subsided all thoughts of earlier and tried to concentrate on something else. The way the trees blew in the viscous wind. The way the clouds invaded the sky and conquered the sun. The way the homes seemed to frown as he walked by without acknowledging them. By the time he reached the park, Clyde was already there, waiting. Luke smiled an apologetic smile as Clyde stared down at his watch with disapproval.
"Come one Lukey boy. I thought you never forgot anything!" he shouted playfully at him.
"I don't. I just like to keep you on your toes. Always the unpredictable one, me." Luke began to relax a little more now he was with his friend.
They laughed and joked on one of the benches in the park. Clyde tried to show Luke how to play football but that sadly came to an end when….let's just say Mr. Gardiner is going to be very surprised when he next looks in his pond.
They had talked and joked for hours, until around one o'clock and both of their stomachs growled to be fed.
"What do say? Chippy?" Clyde suggested nodding to the chip shop around the corner.
"I suppose….." Luke began but didn't get chance to finish as the blinding pain struck him once more. His hand shot to his forehead and tried to rub the pain away, acting natural so as not to strike fear in his friend's eyes.
"Hey, are you ok?" Clyde asked concerned. Luke continued rubbing. The pain was dying down, it would be ok. He took his hand down and looked up to reassure Clyde but as soon as he did, the excruciating pain slammed down harder than ever. I clutched his temples in his hands and cried out in terror.
"Luke!" Clyde shouted alarmed. He stood from the bench and watched as Luke fell to the ground in agony. He dashed over to help him as Luke bent over from his kneeling position and pressed his head into the ground. He tried to contain his screams but it was too much. He cried out into the ground as the pain bolted inside his throbbing brain, slowly torturing his mind until he gave in. he fought it off as best he could but was defeated and he fell into blackness.
"Luke! Luke!" Clyde shook his unconscious friend, trying to stir him.
"Luke! Can you hear me?" He shook him harder but still nothing. The scene was now in complete contrast to the other horror that had played out before him. What was going on? What had caused his friend to be in so much pain?
