„You didn't just lose your mother that night in Godric's Hollow, you know. I lost a sister."
Petunia tried to look at her life in a positive way. Although she never smiled, she loved her family deeply and was quite fond of the way how she lived, but still… there was a small stab of pain deep inside every time she remembered her sister and the world she, a muggle, wasn't part of.
Lily Potter, née Evans, was her younger sister who she haven't seen for years, but sometimes she wondered how she was doing. Lily too has a small boy, only few weeks younger than her Dudley. His name was supposed to be Harry or something like that, if she remembered correctly. She took Dudley into her arms and without thinking she started to imagine how this Harry can look like. Is he as chubby as her little angel? Does he has his mother's green eyes or is he more like his father? When will he start to show his own magic ability, because she was sure he too will be able to use magic like his parents.
Once again she felt this stab of pain.
Once again she felt the loss.
The world of magic – so beautiful, she thought when she was younger, watching her sister. She could let the flower bloom just like that. Just because she wanted to. She envied her, but soon after her realisation that she wasn't, she couldn't be part of this world, to do anything like this – her fascination transformed to hate. After her graduation she left her home, married partially for love, partially for convenience. She tried to forget about this other world, to forget she ever had a sister. She tried hard to be happy on her own, to erase anything abnormal from her world.
She put Dudley down to his high chair in the kitchen, so she could prepare breakfast for her husband. While he was eating it, she told him about the new word he learnt: "Shan't".
Her husband laughed and told her that his son knows what he wants in his life. Petunia smiled and looked outside the window. Of some unknown reason there were owls outside. Flying around. Owls always made her think about Lily.
She loved her dearly as mach as she loved her own family now. What happened to them? How could she let her own jealousy took the better of her? Is she not happy enough now?
She pushed the feeling of loss deeper inside of her own heart. She tried not to feel the pain.
She hugged Dudley. Yes, there is always time for change. She will go and visit Lily. Maybe she will also take Dudley with her.
She stayed next to the window watching owls and this strange cat sitting on the small wall next to their house. The marking around its eyes looked like square glasses, or was it only her imagination?
Yes, there is always time to change things.
