Clove and Rue
Chapter 1
In my nightmares, I was running. From the Careers and finding a girl when I realized it had already happened.
The Careers had ditched me.
I could tell they would find someone else to join them, who they all think is better than me. It all happened on the 1st day of the Hunger Games, when they ditched me.
I remember Glimmer saying tauntingly, " You ought to leave, Clove, or I'll send you away myself, since you no longer belong here! Your so-called boyfriend is no longer yours, he was never yours anyway, 'cause he's go someone else for a girlfriend…Me!"
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I thought Cato was my boyfriend, not Glimmer's, I thought he liked me… but he liked Glimmer instead. Cato was the one who helped me and Isabelle,
when we became orphans, and lost our home. He was the one who helped me, but he never helped Glimmer. I could help them more than they thought, anyway, 'cause I could tell when people would die. Not many people they could find could do that, since no one was more unique than me and Izzy. Both me and Izzy were psychic and could blend into crowds. Izzy never wanted me to volunteer, to leave her alone, but if I won, we could have a home, a place where we felt safe.
I ran like the wind, far away to a tree in the woods. When I got there, I found the girl from 11 { Rue, I think her name] was in the tree. She gasped when she saw me, and leapt down.
"Can I be your ally?" I asked quickly, " I'm no longer with the Careers, after they chucked me out. You're safe, I will not tell them where you are, Rue, since I've always wanted to team up with you. Or to have a choice on who I team up with."
"How do you know my name? Clove, are you sure they don't want you 'cause they might still want you?! They might even be searching, so I'll say no, if…" Rue replied
"If what?"
"If they don't want you I'll say yes, but if they do want you a no."
Rue reminded me of Izzy in a strange way. I didn't know why, since Izzy and Rue didn't look alike in any way but both of them… well… had a strange determination that not many had.
I heard the Careers laughing and joking. When I listened more it became clear they were joking about me. Rue looked me in the eye and whispered, " Fine. Let's run before they get us."
Rue helped me into a tree. " Let's stay here until they come," she whispered," How old are you, anyway?"
" I'm 16. If I die, my sister will go to the Scram, which is a house for orphans to go, if no siblings are left. She's only 9. What about you? Do you have any siblings?"
" Yes, 4. I have 2 older siblings and 2 younger siblings. Their names are Lucy, Ella, Isabel and Bliss. Lucy's 14, Ella's 16, Isabel's 8 and Bliss is 6. What's your sister's name?"
"Isabelle."
