The forest was filled with a broken song. A monstrous yet heartfelt tone that filled the night. It was like any other night for them, the prince and the wolf.
But at this night, the wolf's song had come to an abrupt end, alerting the prince that sat beside her.
"What's wrong?" The prince asks.
The wolf is silent, eyes cast upon the moon.
Thoughts were tangled with hazy memories, something that this human caused whenever they were together. She would do her best to push them aside, ignore them since they were never clear. But, they never left. They always haunted her.
"You call me 'princess'," she speaks. "Why is that?"
The prince looks up to her, seeing that old confusion in her eyes along with something else. A soft and sad smile is worn as memories of their adventure floods into his mind.
Her memories were gone, but his would never disappear.
"Because you are one," he answers.
The wolf was stunned for a moment. A kind word from the strange human. Somehow, it always managed to catch her off guard. But, she fights against his words with a huff and roll of eyes.
"No, I'm not."
"It's true," the prince defends. "You may not think you're one, but to me, you are."
Instinct tells her to fight back, to bark even more at him for saying such outrageous things. And yet, she doesn't. That light and warm feeling begins to fill her chest.
Why would he lie? The human may be strange but he never lied.
Maybe she was a princess.
It sounded…right. Familiar.
"Princess?" The prince speaks up when he notices the wolf fell silent again.
Perhaps he had said too much? Had he messed with the witch's magic? Worry began to rise and he was ready to jump to his feet when-
"You're a strange human."
Human.
When had she ever called prey that before? When had she ever shown them mercy? He had an odd effect on her, but one that was welcomed for a reason she couldn't say.
"Maybe I am."
The prince smiles, settling back into place beside her. A hand touching a flower that was placed between them. Fingers gliding over the petals as he gazed up to the wolf- his princess.
"Will you continue singing for me, princess?"
Without another word, that terrible yet beautiful song filled the forest once more.
