When we first arrive
At our destination
Like staggering tourists
Onto some unclaimed rock—
We don't belong here
But it belongs to no one
Taking and giving our lives
We take more and give less
And gradually begin to give more
Taking isn't
Worth it anymore
A shadow that watches over us
From the deep depths of
What belongs to no one
But is ours to give and take—
It sees everything we do
And everything we've done
It passes judgment
Like God
He bumbled again over the
Rocky cliffs to walk into
Darkness
And she follows behind
Abstinently
Viciously
—Determined
To find the truth behind the
Darkness that they are
Always dwelling in
As more shadows pass
And watch us
And
Judge us
From a distance that seems
Like miles away
From where we are
He holds up his hand, or starts a fire
And she suddenly feels like
She cares about
Something
again—
And she lets down her hair
And walks down the beach,
And he suddenly feels like
He can start
Over
again
On the sandy beaches of our unclaimed rock…
We try to charter territory that isn't ours
Because ours is somewhere
Miles and miles away…
And overhead there is always a blue sky
But sometimes
We catch a glimpse of
An airplane
Passing over high above—
A shadow that watches over us
Like sin
