Chapter One:
The New Prince
Once, in a faraway savanna of Africa, there was a strange rock formation. Nobody had ever discovered it, for it and many acres of surrounding land had been secluded by sharp rocky mountains and deadly jungles that was impossible for humans to survive. But this rock was known as Pride Rock to the animals that lived in this area, the center of a prosperous kingdom known as the Pridelands.
The ruler of this kingdom was a lion named Kovu, and his queen Kiara. They fell in love when the Outsiders and Pridelanders were rivals. But together, the two brave lions reunited the two prides, and defeated Zira. This peace lasted for a long time, but now, the inevitable twists of fate shall bring this peace to an end…
One fateful day, they had a son. He had a black mane, yet a tan coat. The proud king and queen named him Taji. As the late-morning sun shone, the ancient ceremony began. Every animal in the Pridelands traveled to see the new prince, from the mighty elephants, to the tiniest mouse. The new chapter of the Circle of Life had begun.
"Chuki, can you see anything, my dear?" Baya called. Her daughter, Chuki, was sitting on top of a large rock, trying to see the new prince.
"Ma, do I have to sit up here? My rump hurts." she complained
"Hush, Chuki! You know I cannot see very well!" Baya hissed. Chuki cringed. She never wanted to anger her mother, for she knew severe punishment awaited if she did. "Now, be quiet and watch the ceremony. I need to know about this cub." Her daughter sighed and watched the old baboon, Rafiki, raise Taji into the air, followed by all sorts of animals cheering and bowing down. She squinted to try and see the prince.
"Ma, I see him!" Chuki told her mother excitedly. She jumped off the rock and dashed to Baya. Her mother grinned in a sinister way, and chuckled.
"What does he look like, my dear Chuki?" she asked, snidely.
"Um…he has…um…a tan coat, but he has a black mane." she stammered. Baya looked at her, puzzled.
"What did you say, Chuki?" her mother croaked. "You said it too quietly." Chuki gulped. She knew what her mother would do with the cub. She would murder him in cold blood, for Baya was mad, convincing her clan that the lions had taken over their kingdom, and that her kind were the true rulers of the Pridelands.
I cannot do this, Chuki thought. I just can't!
"Well?" her mother demanded. "Tell me!"
"He has a brown coat and tan mane!" she burst out. For the first time in her life, she had lied to her mother. Baya chuckled.
"Thank you, my dear. You have aided your clan in retaking the land." Baya grinned, showing her yellow, bloodstained teeth. "Our land!"
(Author's Note: Forgive me if this chapter seems rushed. The story will be exciting, just you wait!)
