What You Are

"Lex, are you okay?" Lex was in his study when Clark finally found him. He had been pacing for the better part of the hour.

Lex threw up his arm in an attempted brush off to answer Clark.

Clark could sense Lex's distress and refused to be dismissed. He took a confident step closer to Lex. "Lex, talk to me."

Lex stopped abruptly and whipped around to face Clark. "Clark, I am not in the mood to be 'Dr. Phil'ed. I suggest you leave before I say something that I'm going to regret."

Clark faltered a moment before stepping closer. "I'm not trying to be your shrink, Lex. There's nothing you can say to make me leave. Something's wrong."

Lex seethed. "I hate him, Clark. I loathe the man. So, why do I feel the need to protect him? Why do I feel like I need to take care of the man who never took care of me?" Lex asked, his fiery eyes searching Clark's.

This was Clark's chance to tell Lex exactly how he felt. Clark moved to within feet of Lex and looked Lex full on in the eye. "Because you're a good man. No, a great man. No matter how much people look down on you you do your best to help them if they ever need it. Including your father. You're not like him. You're nothing like him. You care about people. You really care."

Lex smirked. "Yes, I'm just a saint dressed as a Luthor."

"Lex, I'm serious," Clark said, no humor in his face. "You have a heart Lex. A big heart. Your father is a bad heartless man. Despite that you can't let him get hurt. He's your father. You try not to, but I know you care for him. Hell, you may even love him."

Lex laughed. "Clark, you have no idea what you're talking about. I don't even know why you're my friend. Why would you want to be friends with someone like me?"

Clark couldn't control himself any longer. Without another word he closed the distance between him and Lex. Before Lex could respond Clark pressed his lips to Lex's.

Lex hesitated for a split second before pulling back. "Clark, what are you doing?"

Clark's gaze fell to the floor as a deep crimson crept up his cheeks. "I, uh. I was kissing you."

"I gathered that," Lex said with a small smile. "Look at me, Clark."

Clark raised his eyes to Lex's. He fumbled for an explanation. "It's just- You were so- You looked so sad. I couldn't help it. I-"

"Shh," Lex said gently. Lex took one step forward to continue the kiss that both boys had waited so long for.
